Hello everyone,

I must apologize for my most obscene portmanteau there, but I wouldn't know what else to call it.

What are the societal rules regarding the wearing of a hat? When do you wear one? When do you not? Should you not wear a hat indoors? Should you wear one whilst flipping pancakes?

My most sincere suggestion...

Wearing your fedora whilst flipping flapjacks is most acceptable.
Wearing nothing at all whilst frying bacon is not.

Anything else is do as one may please around here!

What about in a church? I am aware of some or other hat rule, but I cannot remember if it was for or against the wearing of a hat.

One of the things you'll find is that most topics have been covered in the past. There's no problem with asking questions, but the "Search" function at the top of the screen is an easy way to see if starting a new thread is really necessary.

Bruce, first off welcome to the Lounge! It's always a pleasure to see younger gentlemen take an interest in hat wearing. Now, to address your question:

Traditionally, men take their hats off when entering a church but women do not.

There used to be quite a few rules about hat wearing and I'm sure Emily Post still has some but these days most of the populace are completely ignorant of them. Some here have, as DC notes, an "anything goes" attitude, others are a bit more traditional. Personally, I do what I can within the circumstances to maintain some of the older traditions but it's not always easy to do these days.

I'm just glad Tango Yankee said it less abruptly than I did.

You can also use google to search, it works pretty well.

Carebear is right; there is a thread on using Google to search in the Observation Bar. The problem with it being there is that if you're a new person interested in hats it might be a while before you get to that part of the Lounge.
