The only one I wear to the beach is my "sea grass" with elastic sweatband. It cost about $15, a few years ago. Notice the cloth lined under-brim, for extra sun protection.

Hey

Have any of you ever worn your hat when going to the beach? If so, what kind? Any of you wear your fedora?

No. Only baseball caps and white canvas beaters - where you don't shed a tear if they get an unwanted bath in the sea if the wind blows them off or they get filled with sand.

Beach is about having fun and sports - and the sheer joy of a landlocked guy finally seeing the sea once in a while - I have years of other occasions for being formal and elegant(eloquent).

I wore this hat to the beach today, unfortunately I forgot my camera so the auction pic will have to do. Nice and light, fits good enough not to be lifted from my head in the onshore breeze.

Were I to wear a nice Panama to the beach, my hand would never leave the brim for fear it would blow off and either go into the water or flying down the shore only to be snapped by the claws of a moody sand crab or the oily hands of a sunbather.

But if you're going to be on the beach for long at all, a wide-brimmed hat affords much more solar protection than any kind of more wind-resistant cap, so I'd go with a cheaper straw like J.T.'s, which has the fabric in the top of the crown and the underbrim, a critical feature for a loose-weave straw that otherwise allows rays through and therefore defeats the main purpose for wearing it.

However, despite the elastic sweatband that helps keep it on in a sea breeze, you really need a hat a size smaller than usual to keep it on your head, and that may be uncomfortable and limit its overall wearability elsewhere. Even then, a stiff wind would take it right off and feed it to Neptune, who would laugh and turn you over to Helios to roast your exposed skin.

So, you might want to get a straw or some other kind of wide-brimmed hat with a chin cord. But, if you're like me, a chin cord bugs me when cinched up tight enough to do any good.

Which brings us to the Tilley. Yeah, yeah, I know, not the most stylish hat, and Mr. Tilley's ego is out of control, but his quality hats are ventilated with large brass grommets, available in actual sizes, and a variety of brim widths, colors, and fabrics. (Note: the hemp ones, when smoked, render no psychoactive effect.) With respect to the wind, the key with all of the Tilleys is the Unique design of the cord, which does not go under the chin but rather around the back of the head between the neck and sweatband.

The cord really does keep the hat securely on without the bother of a binding strap beneath the chin. Now if you happen to encounter gale force winds that do blow it off, fret not, as the hat floats, and water does no harm to it whatsoever. Tilleys are not SPF-rated as is the trend now, but I can't see how one scintilla of solar radiation could penetrate the dense fabric.

I'd recommend one with the dark green underbrim that does a good job of reducing glare from the sand. I got mine before Tilley offered that and would certainly opt for that feature on its replacement, but it shows no sign of ever wearing out despite that it's the hat I wear when I need something I don't care about. You see, I found my Tilley, so it was free.

Last month vacationing in Florida I wore what was once my "nice" panama to the beach, as it has long since been sweat through. I was glad I had it, but did have to chase it down the beach (running) for a good quarter of a mile. Probably the most exercise I got that entire week.

Why would you not, if that's what you want to do? Last time i checked, there weren't hat police barring anyone's entrance. Considering what some wear, or almost wear, to the beach, I think choice of hat is a minor concern.
