Here is a preview of some of the screen caps I am going to forward to Mk for inclusion in The Golden Era site.

I am going to screen cap various hats, suits, and other interesting points from classic films.
This grew from a recent discussion on Paddyizing the hat forum.

Yes. He wears it cocked to one side. I think I have seen other shots in the movie when the hat is sitting straight on his head.

Watching it this last time on TCM, I noticed in one scene where it jumps around his head! One time when Powell is in frame, it's tilted the right, the next time it's tilted to the left, the next time to the right, then the left...

I noticed that too.I have quite a few screen caps I made a year ago or so, with hats from some of my favorite films. Who do I send them to?

Slow and steady. It will take MK, Matt, and anyone else involved a while to sort this out. Hopefully, they'll add things steadily, piece by piece. A calm, steady stream, rather than fits and starts (which can splutter and stop).

.
I agree. What I plan to do is choose a film and take as many screen caps as possible of the hats and suits. I will then send it to Mk to use what he sees fit. He can arrange the photos by actor or film.

On DVDs, I've got about 5 hours of color home movies from the 1939 New York World's Fair. There's about 15 minutes of footage just showing ordinary visitors (young, old, black, white, men, women) walking around the fairgrounds. Incredible COLOR views of hats and clothing as they were really worn by our grandparents and great-grandparents.

If I can figure out how to use the screen caps system, I'll get some good stills and send them on to www.thegoldenera.net

Now that footage would be a great contribution. Real people wearing hats are great reference photos.
Which reminds me..on HBO this weekend I saw a documentary on baseball. The documentary was made up of home movies. There were quite a few scenes of the game attendees. The hats and outfits looked great and many were in color.
I will try to get a copy of the dvd and grab the caps for submission.

color footage sounds great.
MK, I've sent you some screen caps.
you know, there is a color film from the mid to late 40s which was basically a big fashion show - I'm trying to think of the name.

Must be the head shape. I can't get an angle like that without squashing my ear.

I bet I could get your hat to do that. First you have to start high on the head. Then lean it to your preferred side. It may end up on the top of your ear but not smashing you ear. See how high it is on the other side? several inches in the most prominent pictures. :D

J

I do my best to wear my hats tilt-y, too, but it's tough. Sometimes I think the trick was to buy a hat that was a little small for you. the hats I wear that are a little small seem go tilt-y better than others.
either way, most of my hats have marks on the underside of the brim where the hat hits my right ear.

I guess it takes practice, but I feel a mite silly standing in front of a mirror in order to get that tilt "just so." Bogey just tossed his hat on and looked great.

Of course, he probably tossed the hat on, then the director yelled "Cut!" and a costumer went over to him and adjusted it to the perfect angle. lol
