Gotta give it credit - it helps to dispel the Kennedy myth in favor of the more likely automobile truth in regards to the fall of the hat.

“There are funny hats, magical hats, eccentric hats, erotic hats, hats that are disturbing,” Ms. Fulco said.

Funny hats, I can picture. Magic hats, too. Eccentric hats are a no brainer - disturbing hats as well. Erotic hats? Can't fathom.

Make sure you check out the two slide shows off to the left- well, mostly just the top one. Most of them are hilarious. If those looks bring back the hat via imitation, we're in for some entertaining, good times.

What would you think if the truth was that there was no part of each look that wasn't long thought out and deliberate? If we're going to be fashionable, it's time to trade in our size 6 through high 7's for some 2's and 15's. Does Art Fawcett have a 15 block so that my next hat comes down to my shoulders? We'll have to see. I have a feeling the fedoras of the future will have eye-holes cut into the crown.

The problem with these "fashion shows" is that they bear no semblance to reality. Men and women that are built like these models are few and far between, and most of the clothing is
unlikely to be worn in a normal setting (especially the women's).

I have seen periodically, fashion recommendations in some Men's magazines that have more realistic-looking mens wear with some reasonable hats.

I actually read that article today at a coffee shop - real newspaper, or how they say now, news in hard copy.
The hats that they pictured were not to my liking mostly, but a good article indeed. I too started wearing a hat when I stopped using an automobile.

My caddy (98 Deville beater) has electric seats and I keep my seat low so even my tallest crown does not bash the door header when I get in. I remember how things were when Kennedy was President so I still believe the he played a part in it, maybe smaller than previously mentioned but everyone wanted to be like the Kennedy's and he did not wear a hat (that I ever saw) often after his inauguration. Kid Rock, the Hip Hop stars and movies are making hats popular (to some extent) again so we should just accept it and run with it. We can steer people our way by dressing nice and wearing real fedoras. Somebody is buying then because there are still a lot of hat companies out there and more and more popping up like "Hats In The Belfry" selling the cheap wool knock offs.

Good, well written article. He makes a very good point about having nowhere to put one's hat! He also makes a very good point about the respect that a fedora seems to bestow. My wife often comments about the good service we will receive in a store or a restaurant, and my comment is always "They respect the hat". Too true. Thanks for posting the article.

Very good read, and it definitely outlines a sad state of our modern attire. I was in Macy's last week looking at shoes and their hat section, while between the shoe and suit departments, consisted of a rack with a couple "Country Gentleman" brand wool felt crushables in only one size. When I was a kid, I remember playing in the hat department while my dad looked for his next "lid" and there was always something different to try on. My dad still wears hats, but since he's still buying them at the department store, they certainly aren't like the ones from 30 years ago... and even then, they weren't like what his dad found in the department stores of his day.

I can say this, though... my dentist has a shelf for hats above the coat rack. Then again, he's also a fedora wearer himself.
