Harbingers of Spring

New York City has had the mildness November and December I can remember - the cherry blossom trees were blooming in Central Park this week - but I'll make this prediction, Bloomfield Hills Michigan - where my girlfriend's parent live (and where we have spent the last 18 Christmases) - will be cold, bleak, grey, stark and dreary at Christmas as it is always cold, bleak, grey, stark and dreary at Christmas there. Sometimes it has or is snowing and that adds a charm, but otherwise, it is cold, bleak, grey, stark and dreary at Christmas. Love her parents, we always have a wonderful time, but I can't say a lot for Michigan in the winter. Just checked the weather for Bloomfield Hills - tomorrow low of 23 / high of 29 - yup, Michigan in the winter (no harbingers of Spring to be seen).

Yesterday I drove up my street and saw, amidst the diminishing patches of snow, a kid throwing a ball up in the air and catching it like she was practicing catching pop flies. Her ankles were about an inch deep in the mud. That's spring.
