Tail Gunner Joe was a two-bit alcoholic opportunist who latched onto domestic Communism as an issue after he got in trouble for defending the SS and taking bribes from Pepsi-Cola, but yeah. If you weren't sufficiently Anti-Communist in his view, if you ever supported the Spanish Republic or even once looked at an old copy of the Worker you found on the subway, or owned any Paul Robeson record other than "That's Why Darkies Were Born" or even slept on the left side of the bed, you were on his enemies list.

One of us is confused. I thought Joe McCarthy was anti Communist and claimed communists had infiltrated the US government, and other aspects of society?
That what you get (caught out) when you cut & paste and don't bother to proof read.

Today in 1926 Willie "Big Mama" Thornton was born. She was a big woman for most of her career, but, due to illness, later became frail and thin. She wrote Ball and Chain, later popularized by Janis Joplin. She died in 1984.

In 1944 Brenda Lee (Brenda Mae Tarpley) was born in Atlanta, GA. Born poor she became the top female singer of the 60s with either 37 or 47 charted hits (depending on the source) during that decade. She lives in Nashville.

Tastes differ, but I have never seen the attraction.

Dione Warwick was born this date in 1940. I remember the first time she was on TV. A group of us youngsters were at a friend's house. The hippest guy in our group told us about this new singer who was going to be showcased that night. We all watched and knew she was destined for greatness. Our hip friend? He went on to be a decent piano player, playing at one time with Bobby "Blue" Bland.

Born on this date in 1940 (died 12/4/93), Frank Zappa (Mothers of Invention) was born. A bit of a creative genius, he named his children Moon Unit, Dweezil, Diva Muffin and Ahmet. While, to the uninitiated the names may seem odd, they all had a special meaning within the family.

"They'll have more trouble with their last name than their first names." - FZ

If you haven't seen the Dweez live, playing Frank's music, beat feet and correct that.

Sent directly from my mind to yours.

This date in 1942, the Louisville Lip, the Mouth of the South and the greatest boxer to ever live, Muhammad Ali [Cassius Clay], was born. He is the only three-time heavyweight champion. His politics aside, what a career he had.

He shares it with: 1962 Jim Carrey, actor & producer. 1927 Eartha Kitt, actress, singer. 1899 Al Capone, gangster & tax dodger. And:
1706 Benjamin Franklin, American politician, scientist, publisher, 6th President of Pennsylvania.

In their primes, an Ali vs. Joe Louis bout would be my choice for the one to determine the greatest of all time (which is, of course, just a fun parlor game).

Joe Louis was before my time, and I never saw him box, thus my preference for Mohammed Ali, whom I saw a bunch of times. But yes, it would be a great fantasy fight.

Paul McCartney remembers Beatles bandmate George Harrison on his birthday the 25th February.
Beatles.jpg

Sir Paul McCartney has paid tribute to his late Beatles bandmate George Harrison on what would have been his 76th birthday. Harrison died in 2001 at the age of 58 after developing cancer. Marking his birthday on February 25, Sir Paul shared a black and white photograph on Twitter showing the pair performing together. “Happy birthday forever George, we love you!” said the 76-year-old singer-songwriter.

So I have no excuse of ever forgetting my beautiful wife's birthday on February 25th. We are dining out with friends tonight at Christina's favourite Italian restaurant. How old is she? I'm the kind of gentleman that never tells. But in my eyes, she's forever 18.
