Reading an article on this in last night's Evening Standard, I realised that I have seen this trailer. Obviously didn't have the impact on me it has claimed for others! I'll give it a go in a few years' time, when it hits free to air television.

Yeah, I probably won't be seeing this theatrically either and will wait for cable. While I can't deny that I got a little nostalgic thrill seeing Ford back as Han, there are too many strikes against this film for me.

1 - I have a much different relationship to Star Wars than younger folks. I was already out of college, and an English major and longtime film buff, when the first film opened in 1977. I loved it, but I never venerated it as great art. I had seen the Flash Gordon serials, Kurosawa and John Ford films, WWII dogfight flicks, etc., knew all the King Arthur stuff and LOTR, had studied comparative mythology, etc... so I recognized Star Wars as a great act of synthesis, but I never took it seriously. It was good fun cobbled together from a lot of other things, but it was not even actual science fiction, not being an extrapolation of our own science and technology, and despite the technological setting, it was really about warring wizards. Anyway, I was always more of a Star Trek and 2001 guy.

2 - I was massively underwhelmed by the prequel trilogy. Even my then-young kids didn't like it. Don't try and convince me the "better" third one redeemed the others. They're all pretty lame.

3 - As a true original Trek fan (I watched from the very first broadcast!), I hated, HATED, HATED both of Abrams Star Trek films. So superficial and dumbed down, entirely missing the point of what made Trek worthwhile in the first place. So I just can't bear to see him wreck another franchise I used to like!

Anyway, for science fantasy I'll stick with the Marvel films - these guys know what they're doing.

No, it belongs right here, as the thread topic is "Han Solo's leather jacket." Like most threads do, however, it has taken off an a bit of a tangent. Adds a bit of spice and variety to a topic.

I agree.
And if a bit of spice and variety is called for, perhaps we can also discuss Princess Leia's outfit too? :)

I took this at the Star Wars exhibit a couple of summers ago at the Canadian Air and Space Museum in Ottawa.
And the astonishing thing was how small Carrie Fisher was ...

Ok. Back on topic ...! :)

Hey … I'm looking at those suede boots of Leia's. Do you think she got that nice nap on those with a Yak brush?

Have you seen the photos of Fisher and her stunt double, both wearing That Costume, sunbathing on the Tatooine set between shots?

Is it only me is rrminded of Elvis' costume designer for the 68 Special, who put him in leather in the mistaken belief that he'd worn leather back in the day?

Yeah, it does, But that was one of those mistakes that turns out for the best, as that was a great outfit. I wish I could get a copy of Han's jacket pictured above, though, as I'd love to wear it to one of the administrative meetings I'm forced to attend. His pocket-square speaks volumes.
