Halloween Costumes

I have plans for a retro-futurist costume of sorts this year - it even features a baseball cap. lol

Actually, the plan is to go as one of the Baseball Furies from The Warriors. If I am going to another function over Halloween season, I might dig out the Edward Scissorhands from last year, or maybe elsewise I'll put together a Rorschach from Watchmen.

Not very vintage.... though I guess Rorschach would at least feature the Burberry and a nice brown fedora....

One day I'll find the right costume event to go to as Steve Macqueen in The Great Escape.

I have a pattern for a bolero with a sailor collar. I am boing to make pant's a skirt or shorts to match and do sort of a Ginger Robers look from Follow The Fleet. I also have two pair of 1940's overalls have made so I may just be Rosie The Riveter.

i really don't know where to get the nurses uniform though... any ideas?

It looks like you could get a basic blue dress, then add a rounded collar to it. The apron looks to be a simple pinner, which you could either make or purchase a white apron then cut off the straps. I don't see any pins on the bib so I assume it's been sewn to the dress. If you aren't sure how to make a pinner, I would be happy to PM you the instructions.

If I dress Vintage, I'll just look like my Normal self....( my friend son says " its Halloween everyday for Ashley")
maybe a Hip hop star or a gangster.... I can paint teardrops below my eyes.

I was told that a costume for me would be to dress modern and "normal"! Its true though. I dont own any modern clothes so, technically I could "dress up" as a 21st century person! BTW Everyones costume ideas are great so far!

Mythological or historical...?

I was thinking Medusa? I've got this vintage, filmy white nightgown that I plan to wear with gold cord twisted around the waist to look like a chiton, then braid up some hair extensions and twine some rubber snakes into them or just wire them to a headband. I want the creepy factor, but still be a cute girl! BUT it's always freezing cold in SF on Halloween! We've been enjoying some awesome Indian Summer but #$&% it, I'm going to be freezing my butt off in my nightgown and sandals...

On the other hand, my friend wants to go as Lizzie Borden, and my alternative is Carrie Nation...at least that way we'll both be warm in our high collars and flannel petticoats!

I have no idea. I have absolutely NO imagination when it comes to halloween costumes. Also, I have no budget this year. My odd hair makes it a little more difficult, but I look terrible (and I do mean terrible) in wigs.

I do have a couple of flapper-ish dresses that I never wear, and good accessories, but my hair's all sorts of wrong. Also, I don't even know if I have anything to do, so it might all be moot.

Since I went crazy last year making my Lobster Johnson costume I'm taking it easy this year. When I was looking through those Library of Congress color photos there was this great shot of a cabbie wearing the billed visor hat and a red and black Pendleton jacket. I snagged a perfect hat and a hat badge off of Ebay and I already had everything else workwear wise since that's my main vintage focus.

Why don't we share simple costume ideas made with items found in your house?

I'll start - The Invisible Man. I made this for my hubby one year out of items we had in the house:

Silk lounging jacket
Ascot
Black slacks
Gloves
Ace bandage wrapped around head
Vintage welding goggles
Red fez
Cigarette in holder

Of course I realize not everyone has lounge jackets, fezes, welding goggles laying about their house, but they are all things that can be found inexpensively about the house.

Another cheap costume made on the fly - Ed Wood in Glen or Glenda. Costume made from items found in my house. I only had to purchase the blonde wig:

Another cheap costume - Green Hornet & Kato.

Hubby wore a sharkskin, early 60's suit, skinny tie & fedora that he already owned. Bought a cheap green mask and walking stick from the costume store and we modded them.

For Kato, I wore a black double-breasted jacket that I modded to look like a chauffers jacket, black slacks, leather gloves and boots. Purchased a cheap chauffer's hat and black mask from the costume shop.
