Ran across a book/mag on ebay for 50's hair that there was no way I could afford, and this is one of the pics that was posted on the selling page. I've been trying to figure out how they created the waves. I'm sure having the hair all one length is helpful, but still confused. Any suggestions on how this is created? thanks.

Faythe,

I would assume since the book is from the fifties that this set was done with rollers instead of pincurl, rag curls, etc. The waves are a direct result of the way the hair was set, meaning the direction the rollers went and the size of the roller. For that type of wave you will want to use a roller that you hair will wrap around at least one and a half times. Also, at the front you will want to position the rollers to the side.

Hope this helps and good luck!

(yes, I'm a hairstylist)

I recommend getting a copy of the Milady's cosmetology textbook that's discussed in another thread. It has lots of setting diagrams and discussion of different setting techniques. It should have enough info in there to help you figure out what kind of roller and set you need to achieve the look you're going for.

I meant to mention that, but wasn't sure how easy they are to come by. My was promptly thrown out after I finished classes!

Are you trying to do the 9 o'clock or the 5 o'clock look? I bet you could do the one with the bow in 15 mins using only a curling iron, a brush, and hair spray.

By the way, here is Sue Lyon (cinema's original Lolita) sporting a similar do!

And here is me with a bouffant... I all I use to achieve this look is a brush, hairspray and a flat iron.

They're pretty easy to come by. I recently bought a copy at Abebooks.com for like $2.

Faythe; Maybe RedHot would let you take a look at her vintage cosmetology book?
If we do another movie/potluck Siesta Fiesta, I'll bring my instructions for late 20s finger waves, which I was quite good at back in cosmetology school. I have a plethora of 1938, 40s, 1954, 1958 shampoo sets. That includes pin curls like ridges (that look similar to finger waves), stand-up cascade, skip, barrel curls that have a similar effect to rollers. Also piggy-back roller sets, early 60s tapered rollers and 50s back-combing techniques. I still have my 1985 cosmetology text book. That would be a kick too.
I need to scan the best ones to post here.

I would be happy to share images from my books! I think I have some instructions that are similar to the styles Faythe wants. But it sounds like Miss Sally has the good stuff....

I think I have something for you..... :D

Here are graphics how some quiet similar hair-dos should be set! I have a whole booklet on that with different hair-dos for different hair-lenghts and face-forms etc.

You can also check the classifieds, cause I have some mags that I try to sell there. They are in German, but the 50s one I sell has great step by step instructions for some cute late 50s dos.

Edit.: Oooops... sorry for the huge images!!!!
