Guernsey jumper

Does anyone know of Guernseys with high/tight necks? A lot of the types I see online have these really big necks, almost like boat collars (but not quite). I like the 70s style of tight, high neck. Not so tight it cuts off circulation of course, but it feels more proper and "fit" to me this way. Thanks!

In my honest opinion, the 'boat collar' neck of the traditional Guernsey is actually quite high - and I should know as I've been wearing them for decades! Maybe you would be more suited to a submariners roll neck or the roll neck version of the military Woolly Pully.

Maybe high is wrong word- maybe i mean "tight" (eg a small neck hole) which, while retaining a crewneck character, prevents more air coming in while hiking, riding a bike - and I feel looks a bit more polished, as it frames the neck and shoulders better.

I love the idea of a submariner but have yet to find one that isn't absurdly itchy or expensive. I tried northern sea, but, although I do not have a particularly high sensitivity to wool, it was almost impossible to wear around my neck. I would welcome submariner suggestions as well!

Thanks for your interesting post. I have found that the neck on a traditional Guernsey is in fact quite tight and quite firm and stays that way over many years. As I said, I’ve been wearing Guernseys for decades and my Navy Guernsey is about 20 years old.

One idea that came to mind is that you get a thick wool sweater from a firm called Sou’West Chunkies. Their wool is beautifully comfortable and they will custom-make a sweater for you so you can tell them about the neck. I have had several of their sweaters over the years and they are also quite inexpensive given the high quality wool.

Outdoor Knitwear do a very good submariner.

That looks very 1980s. It’s nice but personally I prefer to wear the more traditional submariner. But the Paul James still looks great and might well suit your purposes.

interesting you say that, I've seen a few on the streets recently here in Yorkshire too....even one on the back of the barman in our local. I also auctioned a few on evilbay before Christmas and they did better than usual. Odd how fashions come and go.

Ah, Yorkshire ... by far my favourite county. I love going there and have a lot of friends in West and North Yorkshire especially.

I've quite often worn a Steel Grey Guernsey over the past few days and had a lot of admiring comments about it. It's part of my large collection of Guernseys and I've had it for at least 15 years.

familiar gave in the last weekend me the Black Guernsey jumper. She found him at home in the attic. But in the Polish army. And the sweater is clearly British. For her the father was a serviceman. But in the Polish army. And the sweater is clearly British. A production is feeling Guernsey Woolens. There is no date of the production. I think that he is from the end of years 90. or of beginning of the 21st century, because the father was in Iraq in the year 2003.
The sweater is in the almost perfect state, dusty and has the small hole on the left shoulder. Above the stripe Officer Warrant class 2.
It is very much good sweater.

Only information I found which, that of black gansey’s a used Royal Tank Regiment.

Does somebody know, whether some British formation still used black sweaters of this type?
I know, that Guernsey jumpers – however in different colours – used British 7 th Armoured Division and also the Mercian Regiment (at present one such a sweater with stripes and epaulettes is on Ebay).
Sorrow would lie in the wardrobe. So most probably I will refresh him, and stripes will go to the drawer.
Since I didn't have such a sweater, I have the question:
- whether to the urban trekking in temperature 15 - 17 degrees Celsius (59-63 F) with thermal t-shirt it won't be at the bottom around warm?
Wool isn't biting me, so I must not put long sleeves on underneath.

That is an unusual Guernsey, I have never seen one with the shoulder straps or the crown on the sleeve, (these are usually done on the Heavy Wool Ribbed, Army, Navy and Air Force Jerseys) Is the one shown here black or blue? it looks blue on my laptop.

I think some UK Regiments in the Army & Navy have worn Guernseys in the past, certainly in some desert campaigns in the 1940s. Yours looks very good, it may be better to keep the shoulder straps and the crown on the sleeve, it may damage it to remove those.

I do have a navy blue Guernsey made by Guernsey Woolens, I bought it in 1991 and it still looks and feels good & fits well. I am quite happy to wear wool garments next to the skin or just with a short sleeve or sleeveless tee shirt or vest.

I watched epaulettes and the badge: I have a bit of practice – and patiences – and I think that I will let remove the council is eating without damaging the sweater. They are original, and most probably it is a good bit of history, but they are too visible. A bit they would limit using the sweater.
Apart from that in Poland one isn't allowed to use elements of uniform with symbols. Recently they are guarding it.
Whether if I went round London in the sweater, or the jacket with steps of the British army or the jacket, wouldn't police or the gendarmerie stop me?
I am enclosing two cords to gansey with epaulettes.
