7 3/8 but fits more like a tight (not LO) 1/2.
The hat is 7 3/8-1/2 hat is gray, has a raw edge. No idea why this
wasn't snatched up when I listed it before. The Family's Fashion indeed.
Nice, dense felt.

This one reminds me of one DblCoronaMS picked up:

It's in very good condition. It is gray and raw edged. 1 7/8" brim.

$45 plus $15 shipping (CONUS). As with the others, no returns, since
I hate going to the post office. More photos available.

Is there much of, or any, taper to the crown?

Now I trust you're not April foolin' me...

I'm guessing it's a 50s hat. There is some taper, even
all the way around and I'm guessing that's the way it
was blocked. Certainly not reverse taper and I don't
think it ever was.

You can see it in the pix, in spite of the general purpose
lenses with a touch of wide angle that they put on these
darn low end digital cameras. Here's one more picture with
a different camera, but I am not a great photographer and I'm
afraid it won't help much:

Taper is maybe a touch less than the one on DblCoronaMS's head in the link
in the first post in this thread.

Measurements

After all these years, I must admit I never tried to
measure the interior circumference of a hat. I knew
it was hard, but it's really tough. Honestly, I'm not up
to the task. String won't stay put and stretches. Wire
isn't flexible enough. Paper is inexact. No, I don't have
a measuring tape. The best I could do is put it on my
hat stretching device and then measure where it sat-
about 23.5 inches. No guarantees on that. Sorry!

I can see where interior measurements are useful if
you are trying to figure out if some nutty eBay seller
has a size 7 hat or a size 7 5/8 or if the hat has
Italian/French sizing. But for the difference between
3/8 and 1/2, I'm not sure I'll ever believe anyone again!

I'd say this hat is, judging from my 1/2 LO head (pauses to
try it on again) a large 3/8 or a small 1/2.

Do you know if the brim was trimmed at some point? I am wondering why the lack of a felted edge? [huh]
Cavanagh made lots of hats without Cavanagh Edges.
I have an Open Road-style hat with quite a wide brim
and no Cav Edge. I have a Cavanagh homburg (which I think is a
'convertible" to a fedora, or two-way) with a bound edge
(which I will put up for sale soon). I have a Cavanagh cowboy
hat with a raw edge (and a unique one at that - hope to post
it soon). That's why the ones WITH a Cavanagh Edge sport
those words on the sweatband.

In this case, I wondered the same thing myself. I am thinking this
is the way it came, for three reasons. First, it looks very much of
its time- 50s/60s. Second, there is a slight upturn at the edge of
the brim, clearly blocked in, which you can see pretty clearly in
that last picture. Third, it doesn't say, "Cavanagh Edge"
on the sweatband!

By the way, I have been shamed, by way of PMs, into getting a
tape measure, which I will do soon!

Help for measuring circumference

Gentelmen if I may help . . .a fellow lounger brought this up in another thread that I read yesterday. Really comes in handy . . .measure the distance from front to back . . .then side to side and put the measurements in an Elliptical Circumference Calculator . . .

Really comes in handy . . .

CigarMan, Thankyou and bookmarked. While not perfect it is 150% better than trying to explain how to measure a hat to some vendors.

Hat Measured

Let it not be said that Feltfan's House of Hats
spared effort in the pursuit of customer satisfaction...

I spent my $1.79 for a measuring tape. It measured
22 3/4" the first time and 23" the second. The second
was a bit more meticulous.

Using CigarMan's method, I get:

8 3/8" x 6 5/8" gives us 23.72175506950978"

There's going to be variance depending upon the shape of the ellipse, i.e., the oval. Hence the fact that a 7 3/8 will always have the same circumference, whether it be a short oval, a round oval, a long oval, or an extra long oval...
