My grail jacket would be a Johnson Leather-made HD Cycle King repro without belt in 4 oz black steerhide. For now I'm very close to buying that HD/Vanson Cycle King.

I forget how much Vanson asks for that jacket, but having JL build you one in that hide may cost less.

My current grails are my Aero B3 and ANJ4 I ordered last year. The shearling on these jackets is exactly what I wanted: thick, dense, and soft. I made an odd request to pick the softest skins they had and Aero really came through on it!

Here's the ANJ4 with 5 months of break-in wear.

Dull interlude: I've never liked the expression "grail" anything. The quest for the holy grail and finding the perfect jacket don't seem all that related to me and as we said elsewhere, the deeply unsatisfying 1989 Indiana Jones film probably has a lot to answer for here - people are more likely to think of that garbled cod mythology than the 11th century French verse, the Conte del Graal ('Story of the Grail'), where the grail first gets tied to the King Arthur stuff (as I understand it).

I think how this works is fairly simple. We get a Jones (pun unintended) for something and we decide we must have it. When we get it we realize that we are still excited by other similar objects because humans are always on the move and always looking to improve or modify their situation in some way. It's built into us.

the most interesting object in my eyes is one I don't have, and so I keep it that way to keep me interested. But perhaps the second most interesting object is one that keeps transforming into something else, so that I need to have it to monitor it, or try if my intervention can guide its transformation

My first five or six leather jackets were all attempt at finding the grail. After that I simply excepted that there was no such thing for me and what I was really after was the next leather jacket, whatever that may be.
I’ve actually had more fun with the hobby since then because I am not trying to create the perfect leather jacket that will be better than any other that came before it.

Yeah - my favorite jacket, which I have owned for years now, was handmade by an artisan but only cost me around $20. Thrift shop. For a long time I've been way more interested in the serendipitous purchase than going out and buying a costly custom jacket. A good friend is still wearing a nylon windbreaker he bought form Target around a decade ago. Pretty sure it's still his only jacket and he couldn't be happier. He's loaded. This has taught me more about owning stuff than any other single example.
