Do those AE's a favor and put some shoe trees in them. Don't wear them every day so they can dry out and breathe and keep trees in them. They'll last a lifetime with proper care.

Done and done.

I found an original 1950s Alfred Shaheen with shoulder sash for $6 mint condition.

Very nice!! I bet it's gorgeous!

Now is a wonderful time in the thrifts as they put out their Halloween stuff - mucho vintage gets put into the costume racks because they don't know what it is!

Houston is Mecca for thrift shopping if you know where to go. Most of the high-school, college crowd stick to Value Village (which is ok with me since their idea of "vintage" is double-knit poly....) so there are some real gems tucked away in the areas with less shopping traffic.

My mother's been dragging me to Houston thrift stores since I was in diapers - our local Salvation Army growing up was staffed by a group of lovely Hispanic ladies who would take me behind the counter and play with me while Mom shopped around. They saved all the best baby clothes for me - my babydoll (1940s vintage, natch!) was the best dressed on the block! My mother and I still weep over all of the vintage we just didn't snatch up back then - there are several dresses and a certain WAC uniform jacket that STILL give me nightmares.

My best find lately was this dress which I already posted over in The Powder Room -

That's just lovely- you should wear that to the wedding you mentioned- with his dress blues, that'd look great!

Oh I so would except that I'm afraid it's a little too formal for the wedding - it really is a pretty casual event (even if my "date" is wearing his dress uniform...lol). It's my best friends wedding and her dress is really really simple and I just don't want to look like I'm trying to upstage her. If the dress wasn't SO SO gorgeous I'd wear it, haha. I think it's the beading & the lace, it just makes it feel ten times fancier. :)

That is very good of you. I have seen unfortunate events like that.

Thrifting where the wind comes sweeping...

Okay, so this is what I loooove about thrifting in Oklahoma City: there are between 15-20 thrift stores in a 10 mile radius and the general clientele of Oklahoma City thrift stores don’t typically look for the same things as a vintage clothing type shopper. Therefore there is generally a decent supply of vintage, vintage looking, and high end clothing at the thrift stores here in town. I usually thrift a couple times a week as I did today and I had a pretty decent shopping day. Here are my buys:

Uptown thrift
$7.98 Allen Edmonds Nassau Wingtips
$4.98 Banana Republic half button 2 pocket work shirt
$1.98 Ray Ban replicas
$1.25 TAX
$16.19

Bargain Thrift
$1.99 Wool Windowpane Newsie
$1.49 Old Navy Plaid Shirt
$7.48 Brioni Sport Coat
$0.92 TAX
$11.88

Wow, Riley Dee--that's kickin' it! I love that Brioni (of course). If it's a 40/41R I'll give you double your money.

What kind of leather are those AEs made of? Are those sharkskin?

Yesterday I picked up a blue and yellow check Etro shirt (for me) and a pair of Allen Edmonds loafers (that I'm flipping).

We didn't have a Goodwill in Hawaii while I was growing up, but we did have a Salvation Army and a Savers.

I have found many old bowling and gab shirts at these places and my goldmine was finding three mint gabardine Ricky jackets, size large for $5.00 each. These were rock and roll all the way. I had two of them appraised at $200.00 each and one was appraised at $500.00.

But things did dry up in the late 90's. For some reason, 50's shirts made a comeback (I think it was partly do to Kramer on Seinfeld).

Recently I found a pair of perfect wool officer pinks at Goodwill to help complete my Indiana Jones costume for Halloween. They were definitely from the 30's or 40's. I got them for $2.00..

Today at Goodwill I picked up a modern 6x3 DB suit jacket with somewhat high armholes and an excellent fit with a nipped waist. Fits great.

The other day I got a newer Stetson cowboy hat for $5. Cowboy conversion anyone? :D
