If Peter dances in that coat, then you can bet that it's ruined.

Update on the famous green herringbone '30s DB suit (you know the one, Root): After Dita Von Teese broke up with Jeff, he ended up trading the suit to Peter, who wore it dancing and stored it where moths live. End result: the suit is now a shapeless, stained, chewed-up mess. I'm not kidding. (At least Peter used and enjoyed it!)

My greatest regret, Root, is that I didn't take detailed photos of the green suit. That's why these days, I'm going nuts taking pictures. Yesterday, I went to Ben McGinty's and shot photos of his "Oviatt's" collection of '30s shirts, socks and suits. Will post the pictures here as soon as possible.

Oh the humanity!!!

Oh man... that's a crying shame!!! I love Peter like a brother but the way he treats his vintage is a crime to all that is sacred! I'll never forget that suit... it was truly a piece of art!

Wait....

You've got it all wrong dear, Peter is a great dancer but, he doesn't care for his clothes... He tosses them in the closet, doesn't clean them, doesn't care about them. You know me, I dance like mad... but, I clean my clothes and keep them hung where the little moths don't hang out... when it all comes down to it, it's about proper care for vintage and not what you do wile wearing it.

Moral of the store is... DON'T SELL VINTAGE TO PETER!

Yes, this is true.

I know that I have my very first vintage coat and it still fits and is in the same condition as it was when I bought it back in 1996! I wore it to the QM last November and can be seen in the photo of me dancing with Lauren!

I've never found anything like that at the thrift store by where I live. I have seen some suits, and often 3 piece, but they never fit or are weird suits from the 1990's (double breasted suits where only the bottom button buttons, that bothers me). Maybe I can get my dad to take me down to the ones in Pomona, I'm sure he'd be up for it. Can't beat a $5 suit ;) What I'd really like to find is a pair of spats or a double breasted vest. I'm not one for vintage ties...the oldest ties I own are from the 1970's...at least, however, I never wear them.

Oh, the glory days of finding suits in thrift shops are just about over... I know what I'm looking for and when I find something it's very rare. Pomona is good but, not for clothes so much... it's really hit or miss. Vintage ties don't even turn up in thrift shops that much at all any more! They used to but, not any more.

Now, how could any one like the vintage look and not like the real ties of the period? Well, that might be because some one such as that isn’t aware of all the beautiful art and construction of ties that were made 60-70 years ago. I'd never say I don't care for something until I learned more about it to make an educated decision… As for I, I’ll never wear modern ties as long as I have a closet full of vintage beauties!

Thrift shops are good once in a wile and it never hurts to look but, to go out of one's way to hit up thrift shops with the intent to find a $5. dollar suit is setting them selves up for a grand disappointment.

You said it! It makes it so much more pleasing when you do find something though. Like the dozen, or so, 30s ties i just found in Goodwill. Unfortunately they have a central depot in Indianapolis. I asked the lady at the counter: "Where can i find the rest of the wardrobe these came in with?" Somewhere in Indiana, apparently ... These ties are in mint mint mint mint condition. The rest of the wardrobe i'm sure will be too. Must get down to Indy sometime.

I'm waiting for my local dope store (vintage clothing as a front - fedora wearers get some weird looks in there, i can tell you. Something about "the man" ;) ) to rotate out the ties i've been through already. they apparently have thousands more in storage. A couple hours of wading through polyester abominations and gagging back the vomit. Should get a few decent ties out of it.

Thrift store finds at lunch today (excluding the mannequin head, of course!)

Not really vintage for the most part, but definately fun and cheap! There's some 78's (including the andrews sisters and bing crosby singing "three cabilleros"), a 50's scarf with fish all over it, and fabric to make summery things with!

I've already named the planter "exotic juan" :p

Grand total? $23.

Back in the 80's I used to love finding those old shadow plaid van husen shirts. I'd wear them constantly. I still have one I tucked away but never see them anymore. I'm not a big suit guy as the chance to wear them is very seldom but I do like tweed and nice wool jackets. Don't see many of them anymore , true vintage at least.

Lots of mid to late 50's suits at the local Salvation Army right now..several labled Made in Hong Kong...Also saw a pair of size 16 Alllen Edmonds black wingtip brogues..I can grab them for someone on Monday..these things are pretty big...

Best hat I ever had was in the same store some years ago for 2 dollah..

Brownish gray mid 50's stetson with a narrow black grosgrain ribbon..never worn...It was also the first hat I learned not to leave in the car day after day in the summer..

Not golden era but...

Best find ever...

A pristine, never used (still had papers in the thermos) metal Strawberry Shortcake lunchbox circa 1984 for $60.

I had the box as a kid, the exact same one, man I smiled ear to ear when I found it.

I was carrying it one day (yes for lunch) and I had someone offer me $500 for it. I said no.

I have it on a shelf in my closet now :)

Thrift Store Heaven!

WOW, I just had to delete about 4 paragraphs about how started buying vintage things from the Thrift Stores; that's a whole storey in itself! Maybe I'll start a thread on that!

Anyway, my neck of the woods is abundant with 40s & 50s men's clothing, although not so much for women's and since the 1960s is the flavor of the high schools, colleges and universities, they pretty much leave all the older things alone! Only collectors and vendors have jumped ahead of me in buying the older things.

It's not a real big 'dress up' town here, unfortunately for me socially, but great for me in shopping at the Thrift Stores!

And I have a little FYI about things that don't get sold.... They get sent to other countries where clothing is needed. At least that's where our Rescue Mission clothing goes.

Anyway, I try to schlep around in the not so nice areas fairly often, as they have the best prices and some really neat stuff -and I find that in the men's area, there's usually some older gentleman willing to tell you about when he had a suit or jacket 'just like that' -and those stories, as well as the visit, are the most special things that I have taken home from the Thrift Stores.

I LOVE the stories!!

2lbs. 11.1 oz. pants

I recently found these at a local thrift store. The trousers are 100% cashmere, fully lined, and are the heaviest pair of pants I have ever encountered. I actually took them to the post office to get an accurate weight...2lbs. 11.1 oz.

The white tag reads “Ellis of Edinburgh”. I am curious about the maker and the two small flap pocket, is it two watch pockets?
