Dang! I wish my barber offered cold beer!

No doubt illegal here in the U.S. due to federal, state and local liquor ordinances, or if not, completely cost-prohibitive based on the five or six figure deposit required for most liquor licenses.

Been cutting my own hair for more than a decade. To tell you the truth I wouldn't bother to go to a barber again even if it was free. [huh]

One Too Many
fine tradition

Twitch, my man, you are missing out on an ancient ritual, I reckon the old-style barber shop is a precious reliquary of male shibboleths, a refuge in these times of rampant cultural feminisation. :)
I was never one of those kids who hated the shears and the chair, instead I revelled in the tales of boxers long gone, the smell of bay rum and the dog-eared titty magazines that lay in piles below the out-of-date tyre company calendars. Where else would I have heard of Jack Dempsey, Raymond Chandler, Breaker Morant, Young Griffo, etc etc etc.
Even when I grew my hair in the 60's/70's I never turned in disgust and railed against the so called tyranny of the barber, and when maturity prevailed and I returned to a traditional manly haircut, I didn't last long in the 'salons' run by fey 'hairdressers' mincing about to Boy George's repulsive moanings. I hunted out dusty old barber's shops in the side streets where the gentle clack of the scissors and the rustle of antique wrestling periodicals were the only sounds to break the sacred silence.
You never hear the end of complaints about the young fellows of today and their ignorance: I put it down to lack of tonsorial education.
Get a haircut!

On a billboard near my house there is an advertisement for Seagram's Gin that says snip snip. sip sip. and shows a cartoon of a young Black man enjoying a highball whilst getting his hair tended to by a young Black lady as Grand-dad looks on. Hmm, explains a lot of the hairdos I see around my neighborhood.
It seems like I've heard that fussy salons offer wine to patrons? The whole thing seems illegal.

Very well put mate. Had a great laugh at the Boy George reference - too true!

One Too Many
the legend

I was of course referring to the legendary ERIC in Riley St, and the one in William St Paddo which I lived next door to for a while!
I became good mates with Eric and when the shop closed I cleaned it all out for him and souvenired a lot of stuff that the antique dealers didn't want, including the bust of the asian girl that sat above the mirror!
