Just in time for Halloween.

Two of the so-called Bermuda Triangle's most mysterious disappearances in the late 1940s may have been solved.

Scores of ships and planes are said to have vanished without trace over the decades in a vast triangular area of ocean with imaginary apexes in Bermuda, Florida and Puerto Rico.

But a new examination for a BBC series provides plausible explanations for the disappearance of two British commercial planes in the area, with the loss of 51 passengers and crew.

One plane probably suffered from catastrophic technical failure as a result of poor design, while the other is likely to have run out of fuel.

The bartender's tale is positively Lovecraftian.

Haunting prompts relocation to Walton County
August 31, 2009 1:17 PM

When Carney remodeled the house it led to the discovery of a compartment hidden behind a wall plastered with newspapers from the 1930s and ‘40s. In the ceiling of this compartment, he discovered three antique clocks all manufactured 24 years apart and set to the same time. He also found a box containing about 60 lengths of multicolored, braided human hair.

By asking around in town, Carney learned that the previous owner of the house, Cleave Farmer, went missing without a trace. After Cleave’s disappearance, the house sat on the market for more than 20 years and went up for auction at least three times, but never drew a bid.

Carney’s time at the farm was full of peculiar incidents and eerie discoveries. With Carney’s gift of gab, he captivates with the tales he weaves about strange lights in the woods, stone walls and alters, a chest hidden in a stream, an Indian burial ground and his own firsthand contact with whatever is haunting the farm.

According to various ghost hunting sources on the Internet, the Moonville Tunnel is regarded as one of the most haunted places in Ohio by many ghosthunters. The old tunnel sits along Raccoon Creek in the Zaleski Forest. The town of Moonville was a mining town founded in the 1850’s which was said to be located around the tunnel which was used by the Marietta-Cincinnati Railroad. The town’s population is said to have peaked in the 1870’s at under 100 residents. The town then completely fell off the map and disappeared in the 1930’s. All that’s left is the tunnel, a cemetery and a few old foundations for long-gone homes. The train stopped running in 1986 and the tracks were torn out in 1988.

I think HP Lovecraft wrote a story based on this place

http://www.gadling.com/2009/09/14/mystery-hill-americas-stonehenge/?icid=main|aimzones|dl4|link7|http%3A%2F%2Fwww.gadling.com%2F2009%2F09%2F14%2Fmystery-hill-americas-stonehenge%2F

In the quiet woods of New Hampshire, there lies a mystery. Strange monuments of stone are interspersed among the trees. Some look like squat houses, others like enclosures of some kind, and there's a large, flat stone with a channel cut around it that looks perfect for some bloody ritual.

This is America's Stonehenge, also known as Mystery Hill, and it's been attracting the curious for generations. The owners claim it could be 4,000 years old, built by a lost Native American tribe or some unknown civilization. Others think that druids or Irish monks sailed across the sea and built this as a ceremonial center. Researchers claim to have found that some of the standing stones have astronomical alignments and would have helped the ancient builders schedule their harvest and plowing as well as religious rituals.

*

But is this really "America's Stonehenge"? Professional archaeologists tend to dismiss the claims on several grounds--no ancient European artifacts have been found at the site, the structures aren't all that similar to ones found in Europe, and in fact look more like Colonial period storage buildings. The "sacrificial altar", according to one archaeologist, looks like a Colonial apple press. There's also the problem that the man who bought the site in the 1930s allegedly moved around many of the stones to make it look more impressive.

More ghosts appear in Kent than elsewhere in UK, finds research
Kent has the highest incidence of phantoms and poltergeists while UFOs are much more prevalent in Yorkshire, a new report suggests.
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/ukn...Kent-than-elsewhere-in-UK-finds-research.html

Lionel Fanthorpe, 74, from Cardiff, has spent the past 25 years researching “supernatural phenomena”, and on Monday publishes his findings.

The highlights include such mysteries as the phantom hitch-hiker who climbs into passing cars, a time-slip road that takes motorists back to the 1940s, and the ghost of a one-legged priest.

Seems there's also one in Liverpool. Of course, no group of FLers' in the UK would sneak around on All Hallow's Eve dressed period just to get a rise out of the drunks. Never.

The ghost, dubbed “The Grey Lady”, was first seen by a custodian in the 1930’s. She is thought to be the ghost of a former librarian. Since the initial sighting, library staff, library patrons, and even policemen, have all claimed to see the ghost. Actually, the policemen claimed to have seen two ghosts. This leads to the question of the identity of the second ghost.

ST. LOUIS (Oct. 1) - Patty Henken always thought she found great value in the rickety rocking chair when she plunked down $200 for it at an auction, figuring she could restore the century-old relic to its former charm.
Doing that turned out to rock her world, sending her on a treasure hunt straight out of a mystery novel.
Five months after hauling the chair home last November, Henken spent hours in May prying the seat off it in her garage in Mount Sterling, Ill. A small envelope fluttered from it as she tossed the seat aside — "Finders Keepers" typewritten on it. Inside, a key was taped to a note.
"This DEXTER key (number sign) 50644T will unlock a lead chest," the note began, before spelling out a location in Springfield, Ill. — 1028 N. Fifth St. — where a chest containing more than $250 in U.S. gold coins supposedly was buried 12 feet below ground.
The stash, the note claimed, included eight $20 gold pieces, six $10 gold pieces, five $5 gold pieces, three $2 1/2 dollar gold pieces and two $1 gold pieces.
The note, signed by a "Chauncey Wolcott," included a request to contact the Springfield newspaper if the chest was ever found. Henken finds that intriguing, thinking Wolcott perhaps has left a confession in the chest or "wants to give us an answer to an old mystery."

http://www.gnn.com/article/woman-follows-rocking-chair-note-to/695024

An Iowa woman who read news accounts of the hunt said she knows Wolcott's true identity: John "Jay" Slaven, a notorious practical joker and coin collector who often used a typewriter in his pranks.

Slaven used the pen name "Chauncey Wolcott" and lived for decades at the location where the dig took place, until his 1976 death, according to Betty Atkinson Ryan of Mason City, Iowa. She e-mailed a columnist for the State Journal-Register of Springfield to set the record straight.

Atkinson Ryan told the newspaper that Slaven was her boss in the Journal-Register's classified advertising department decades ago. She said Slaven often used a typewriter to compose some of his jokes and signed them "Chauncey Wolcott." The newspaper said archived news articles described Slaven as an actor with a "booming voice" that he used in television appearances, about 50 radio shows and to narrate the annual Illinois State Fair film.

If there is something strange in a Gilford neighborhood, the Ghostbusters will not be at anyone's front door to help pursue the paranormal.

As for Grace Herbert of Hoyt Road, she does not have a problem living inside a house where she has witnessed ghost activity and apparitions and experienced some interesting happenings involving the spirits of the dead.

It all started in 1973, when Herbert and her husband purchased the house at 324 Hoyt Road. The first apparition Herbert witnessed was an elderly woman lying in bed with her arms crossed in the upstairs bedroom, which she keeps as the guest room when people visit.

Most of the activity she has witnessed has occurred either in that bedroom or in the living room downstairs, directly beneath the bedroom.

"The people who lived in the house before us had similar experiences as us," said Herbert. "The owners before them in the 1930s had experienced things as well."

"When I see a pretty girl walking down the street I think two things. One part of me wants to take her out and talk to her and be real nice and sweet and treat her right, while the other wonders what her head would look like on a stick. "

The haunted house on Lockport Street in Plainfield is really a restaurant, but people who work there have paranormal-activity-like stories to tell.

Baci Italian Ristorante at least has a reputation for being haunted. Just ask the staff that works there; each has at least one story to tell about encounters with ghosts, music playing that cannot be explained, or voices heard when no one is in the room.

Gettys has seen the apparition of a man wearing a suit from the 1930s and has heard a ghost encouraging her to finish working.

WHEN Ohara Page noticed something strange in her new house, she knew who to call - the Queensland Paranormal Investigators.

QPI is a group of five people with an interest in paranormal activity who are Brisbane's real-life Ghostbusters. They respond to calls of wayward spirits harassing buildings across the city.

Ms Page, owns historic Cooroona House at Wynnum, on Brisbane's bayside. She called QPI last week after spending just three days in her 1930s heritage-listed home, which she bought for $1.2 million.

Fire damages Missoula home with haunted past
http://www.missoulian.com/news/local/article_b9d69aca-2e5f-11df-9110-001cc4c002e0.html

The Victorian house on 319 S. Fifth W. was built around 1902 by UM professor Frederick Scheuch. He lived there, apparently without incident, until his wife died in 1935. He retired two years later and moved back to Michigan.

The house was briefly owned by another couple until James and Eleanor Zakos bought it in 1939. According to the book Big Sky Ghosts, the couple and their six children soon began hearing ear-splitting shrieks that seemed to come from inside the house.

About 10 years ago, I was lying in the bedroom of my house in Cheyenne, Wyo., an old place that used to be workmen's lodging down by the Union Pacific railroad station. I wasn't in a deep sleep, more like that murky in-between state as slumber comes in for a landing. I opened my eyes halfway. In the doorway of the bedroom, a young man stood staring at me. Was he 15? Was he 20? Dressed in work clothes from the 1930s, of humble posture, he was there -- I will never forget those eyes -- yet I could see straight through him. Frightened to my core, I sat up, screaming until my boyfriend shook me. "What? What?"

Belfast film maker George Clarke has posted a clip from a 1928 Charlie Chaplin premiere on YouTube to try to get to the bottom of the mystery.

George believes that a character in the background of a shot is talking on a slim black mobile phone, decades before they were invented. Having analysed the grip they are using on the object and their facial expression, he believes there is no other explanation.
