I grew up essentially in Glendale, and though I've never heard of it, this looks legit. I found a website with an address, and it's located right where the industrial area meets residential, right where I'd expect it to be. I'll have to swing by and take a peek, thanks for the tip!

I work in Glendale, and keep meaning to take a look at the terminal. I know that the runways and taxiways are gone, so don't look for anything that resembles an airport.

You can see the terminal in all its glory in the movie "Flight Angels." (1940)

Since I´m very keen on flying, it may sound like a dumb question, but what is so interesting about the Glendale Airport???

And speaking of Glendale..... the railway shots in "Double Indemnity" were filmed at the Glendale station. Worth a visit (unless you are in a cast and heading to the Stanford game.....).

The actual airport is gone but the original Air Terminal building is still standing.

Old Air Terminals

If old train and bus stations have been an endangered species, old air terminals are even more so. There was a wonderful old terminal building at the Buffalo Airport. The airport was completely (and beautifully) redeveloped over the last several years, and one of the last things to go was that terminal. It had a great art deco style tower. Newark Airport had a fabulous fifties vintage passenger terminal, that totally evoked the era of DC-7's and Constellations. That's gone, too. Old airport terminals tend to be in very bad locations for preservation. I'd like to know from other Loungers if they know of others. This is another Golden Era facet worth remembering.
This was a very interesting thread. Thanks for posting.

Prior to WWII, if you flew into Los Angeles or Hollywood, you arrived at Glendale. Howard Hughes, if memory serves, was based there.

Disney owns it now. I wish they'd complete the earthquake repairs (it was badly damaged during the 1994 earthquake) and restore it for use in vintage-themed movies and events.

So we (my husband and I) went hunting today and found the terminal! It's really fantastic, albeit decrepit.

I couldn't remember the address exactly, because we went on a whim, so we just cruised the area. Eventally the car was pointed the right direction and I saw the tower, and we just followed our noses from there.

The parking lot is open, it looks like nearby businesses might use it? so we just drove in. There's a fence around the building itself, but you can see most of the exterior. Fantastic Deco detailing, and a spanish tile roof, with most of the tiles missing. This would be such a gem if it were restored. Glendale and Burbank drive me crazy, they don't care about their old buildings AT ALL. If it were in Pasadena it would be immaculate, I betcha.

Next time I'll have to snap some pics, didn't have the camera today!

To add to this interesting thread...

Denver's Stapleton International Airport is long gone. Closed in 1995. The terminal has been torn down, but the control tower is being preserved as a historic monument. Parking garage is still being used to date. Most of the airport is being redeveloped as the largest urban infill development in the country.

Denver's Lowry Air Force Base, original home of the U.S. Air Force Academy, has also been redeveloped over the past few years. Some traces of runways remain as well as a hanger housing the Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum. Also the small Eisenhower Memorial Chapel remains. Most other buildings are being redeveloped or are disappearing fast. I have no idea where the terminal was located as flights were discontinued long before the base closed.
