Gilding sweats

Anybody have any experience with transferring trademarks, etc. to a new sweatband when the old one gives out?

Ideally, I'd like to be able to:
-use a scanner to get the design into my computer,
-print it to a transfer foil by using a xerox copier,
-apply it to the leather with a hot iron.

I have a Borsalino in need of a new sweat, and it would be too bad if it couldn't say Borsalino inside any longer.

I'm sure you and I are not the only ones with this problem. I also have one with a sweat which is just starting to crack and dry, well maybe it a little more than just started. I've wondered the same thing. Could the artwork be duplicated on a new sweat. Hmmm

Embossed

I'm betting that those logos were embossed (pressed) into the sweatband utilizing gold foil.

Yes, and a custom made metal stamp in an elaborate press.

I'm looking for a way to utilize the tools I already have. Going into business is one thing, this would be just for myself.

So far my web researches have revealed a process that will gild copier toner pre-applied on paper. I'd have to stick my leather into the xerox machine even to test that process. Some art bookbinders have gotten interesting results doing that, but I'm not keen to try it.

Hey Fletch,

Could you use a scanner, rather than a copie,r to scan in the image from the original sweatband? I'm thinking than once it's into the computer as an image file you should be able to touch it up enough to get a great print out on paper.
