Several years ago I was told the reason the so-called "Gray" aliens keep coming to Earth is because they don't have souls, but are very curious about the concept and want to understand it. Of course, since we humans don't really have a thorough understand of souls, or even whether or not they truly exist, the Grays probably leave Earth with no more answers than they had when they arrived. If that's the actual reason they come here, that is...if they do. I neither believe nor disbelieve until further evidence presents itself.

My Mother did the same thing during the last few years of her life. We'd hear the same stories over and over, but would act as if we hadn't so that Mom wouldn't realize she was repeating herself and get upset. And, according to Mom, her "cousin Peggy" had every disease known to mankind at one time or another. If you told her, "So-and-so has the flu/measles/peritonitis/scurvy/cancer/whatever," she'd respond, "Oh, my cousin Peggy had that." :)

Both my mom and my father-in-law interacted with people we couldn't see or hear whenever they were in the hospital during the last two to three years of their lives; particularly during what would be their last stays. For example, my wife and I would be talking with her dad, and we'd suddenly realize he was having a separate conversation with someone else. Once it a while he'd refer to them by name, and my wife would say something like, "Wait, that's my uncle so-and-so. He died 15 years ago." And during Mom's last stay in the hospital in January of 2004, she suddenly started having a conversation with my brother who died in 1984.

Their various nurses wrote this behavior off as "hallucinations caused by fever". But we have a friend who...well, to say she has "studied Metaphysics" is really only acknowledging the very tip of that particular iceberg...and she explained that Mom and F-I-L were indeed communicating with the "souls" of deceased relatives who were helping them to prepare for the transition that comes after the body dies. Who was right, the nurses or our friend? Or both? Or neither? I know what I believe; I'll let each of you decide for yourselves.
My grandmother apparently said, "I see my father, he's coming to get me" several times before she died. My grandfather said three years later, "my wife is coming to get me." (My father witnessed both of these.)

Apparently it's common?

But what if aliens really *aren't* any more advanced or evolved than we are. What if aliens are really just a bunch of sad-eyed, pot-bellied characters who punch space timeclocks during the day and sit around on their space couches at night watching dopey late night space comedians and go thru their lives wondering if there's any point to it all? Just like us -- but IN SPACE.

That would be too depressing to contemplate, one species that has come to an evolutionary dead end is enough for any universe.:D

Incidently, we're in space too. ;)

Half joke because if there really is a secret laboratory where NASA houses frozen humans for whatever reason, Bowie would surely be among the company....

Bowie wouldn't have liked that otherwise he would have arranged to be cryogenically frozen. Even if a 'cure' for cancer(s) is found at some point in the future, once you're dead, you is deaded, it's highly unlikely the boffins will ever be able to resurrect the dead or repair the tissue damage caused by the cancer & the deep freezing. :D

Apparently. If it is in fact so common, it could support my friend's belief that the souls of people we were close to here on Earth do come back to aid and prepare us for that transition to whatever form we take after our bodies stop functioning. On the other hand, if the nurses are correct people are simply hallucinating about the people they most want to see in the afterlife. The great mystery continues, and we're no closer to having any definite answers.

Even if we were able to repair such damage and resurrect the dead, where would we put them? The planet is overpopulated as it is, and that problem grows daily. No, I think nature has it right--we're born, we live, we die; that is as it should be.

There is always room for the rich & famous but if does become a tight squeeze, a little culling at the lower end of the scale to thin out the herd, might be an option. :D

I made a semi-joke the day he died to my friends that he was simply frozen by NASA until we can figure out how to cure his disease.

Well, there really is a private company that does this, an outfit called Alcor, in Arizona. And there are few famous people there, notably baseball legend Ted Williams. Immediately after his death in 2002 he was taken to Alcor, decapitated, and his head and body dunked in liquid nitrogen and sealed in metal cylinders. According to an Alcor worker who was in a position to know, the head has a big crack in it, and is propped up inside its cylinder on an empty tuna fish can. When Ted wakes up, he's going to be really upset -- he only liked fresh-caught tuna, not canned.

So driving in to work today, I heard Marty Robbins's El Paso City, and it reminded me of this thread. It also reminded me how great Marty Robbins was. So pardon me, if I'm a little sentimental...

An excerpt:

My mind is down there somewhere
As I fly above the badlands of New Mexico
I can't explain why I should know
The very trail he rode back to El Paso

Can it be that man can disappear
From life and live another time
And does the mystery deepen 'cause you think
That you yourself lived in that other time

Somewhere in my deepest thoughts
Familiar scenes and memories unfold
These wild and unexplained emotions
That I've had so long but I have never told

Like every time I fly up through the heavens
And I see you there below
I get the feeling sometime
In another world I lived in El Paso

El Paso City by the Rio Grande
Could it be that I could be
The cowboy in this mystery
That died there in that desert sand so long ago

El Paso City by the Rio Grande
A voice tells me to go and see
Another voice keeps tellin' me
Maybe death awaits me in El Paso

So, Roswell, hoax or government cover up ?

Hoax. There is no way in hades the U.S. Government can organize that kind of cover up. Gee wiz, the President can't even have a freak scene in his own office without the whole world finding out about it, they certainly can't have that many thousands of people keep their mouths shut for more than 10 seconds.

There *was* a coverup -- but not the kind the tinfoil hatters think it was. The military was testing high-altitude surveillance balloons intended for spying on atomic tests in the Soviet Union -- the primitive equivalent of modern satellite surveillance -- and one of them crashed over the testing range. Given the level of public paranoia that was already rampant in 1947, it wouldn't have helped matters to reveal the true nature of the project, so the weather balloon story was put out instead.

There was a surge of interest in UFO sightings and other such paranormal activity in the 1950s, but Roswell wasn't a big part of this -- far more attention was paid to the "hollow earth" theory of an evil civilization living underground and using "detrimental robots" to kidnap surface dwellers. Long John Nebel made a very good living on the radio in the late fifties and early sixties propagating this kind of stuff. Roswell didn't become what it is today until the post-Watergate "how do you know when the government is lying, its lips move" attitude of the late seventies and early eighties became prevalent.
