Ghosts, anyone?

Many people that have lost a loved one describe seeing them and some times speaking with them in the the days, weeks , or months after the passing. It may be more of a waking dream experience than touching the etherial plane.

I refuse to believe that you seriously believe that you have to be psychologically imbalanced to have your brain play tricks on you so I will properly ignore that.:rolleyes:lol I knew that someone would toss the word "morals" around when dealing with "spirits". I am just surprised it took so long.

No, of course I don't believe that but by your expressed skepticism, people who see ghosts must be psychologically imbalanced because nothing like that is supposed to exist. It just can't be true. It must have something to do with seeing things brought on by alcohol and drug consumption or mental illness(temporary visual and auditory schizophrenia maybe) because ghosts cannot exist if there is no afterlife or God and you just die and lay there dead---rotting in a tomb. There is just no other explanation.
That is why I say I would rather say I believe in ghosts. :p ;) lol
I used to be skeptical too, about ghosts anyway, but some strange experiences have taught me a different lesson---and no it didn't involve drugs, drinking or mental illness. :D

I wondered if anyone here has a good true ghost story?

I tuned in late to this thread, but here it goes...

Several years ago I worked late shifts in a business park (Cherrywood if anyone is familiar with it) just outside Dublin. As I lived in the city and didn't own a car, I was at the mercy of Dublin Bus and their creative approach to scheduling. My shift ended at 12:00, however I would leave at about 11:35 so I'd catch the last bus into town that arrived at 11:45 or so.

The business park is at the top of a hill, and there is a curving road down to the bus stop, which consists of a semi-open glass shelter. On this particular night, sometime in November, I left at my usual time and made my way down the hill. I was relieved to hear voices coming from the bus stop, as that meant that the 45 hadn't arrived yet. As I got closer I could hear and see two people, a young man and a girl - both probably in their late teens. They were laughing and doodling on the glass of the bus stop. The glass had misted over.

Just before you get to the bus stop, about 3 to 4 meters away, there is a small barrier that you have to cross over (step over literally) to go from the grass to the slip road surface. I looked down to step over said barrier, looked back up and they were gone. I didn't realise it at first - I got to the bus stop a few seconds later and they just weren't there. There was silence, and it took about 3 seconds for it to register that the two people I saw only seconds before had literally vanished.

The motorway is not busy at all at that time of night, and I would've seen a car stopping to pick them up - I was that close. They couldn't have run across the street suddenly either, as there is a sizeable concrete barrier that they would have to ford, and directly on the other side of the street is a reinforced wall. The motorway is very well lit, and I would've seen them. Believe me, I looked!

I thought that perhaps I imagined them, or that my mind was playing tricks on me. That would've been understandable, however their doodles were still on the bus stop glass behind me!

Nothing extraordinary, just a heart, some scribbles and some other indecipherable stuff.

I'm an open minded, yet rational person, however this was very, very creepy!

My skeptisism does not say that anyone that believes in ghosts or anything else that does not exist is either drunk, stoned or mentally ill. Naive yes but not necessarily drunk, stoned or mentally ill. I think you would agree that the power of belief can make people see and do the most unbelievable things. The murdering highjackers on 911 believed very strongly that they were going to be seeing some virgins soon after their deeds. The guy that shot and killed a Doctor because he preformed abortions felt quite strongly about his actions also. Strong enough to murder. But what are you going to do?[huh] If believing in ghosts or whatever keeps you from being a bad person, by all means believe. If it makes you kill others or something like that, you should be eliminated. We all need to feel good about death. If you want to believe there is more to death than rotting bodies, you have my blessing, so to speak..:eusa_clap

It's kind of funny that Bebop who doesn't believe in ghosts tells a most convincing ghost story. All the more believable because someone in his shoes would be less apt to exaggerate the event. If that happened to someone who believed in them, it would have been seen as strong proof of their existence. It's not about evidence but about how evidence is interpreted. If you believe in the frequency of miracles, for instance, you will see miracles all over the place, but if your belief system does not allow them, there will be none. Regardless of what you see, there will always be a way to discredit them. Ghosts or not; it all depends on the convictions of the viewer.

If it is then a question of faith,....or the lack thereof,

I would choose faith. I would rather experience the awe and mystery of life, than simply discount it all as hogwash. I have seen and experienced many awesome and strange things in my life, not I think as a result of any great faith I possessed, but as a result of my desire to know more, to have more faith. Life would be very unfulfilling and mundane without at least believing ln the possibility of other dimensions (to state it simply) within the confines of what we call reality.

Since I don't drink I had to check around to see if people actually see things that are not there when drinking and consensus says that people that have been drinking do the opposite and fail to see things, not see things that are not there. Maybe I had taken more than my quota of LSD that night.:D :p

You are right, Section10. It does all depend on the convictions and may I add, vulnerability of the subject at the time of the event.

I still think that I had my father in law fresh on my mind and really wanted him to be around so that is why I saw him and talked to him. My dog could have been chasing the cat at the same time I thought my father in law called him. For all I know, the cat sparked my seeing something. How my dog got into the house without my opening the door is still a mystery. Maybe just turned himself into a spirit and went through the door?[huh]My dog is long dead otherwise I would ask him. Oh, did I mention that I do believe in having conversations with dogs?

My friend William lived in a house on Meucci Avenue in Copiague on Long Island. That house was haunted.

John you really must try harder if you want to be a good ghost story teller. while i admire the stripped-down use of launguage in a line like "That house was haunted" i still feel it could do with some embellishment. were there any rattling of chains, or disembodied levitating heads for instance ? or eerie moaning sounds ? ;)

I didn't want any of my feeble attempts to describe the supernatural happenings to get in the way of your imagination.

My friend Bill and his younger brother Bobby lived in the home with their mom.
Used to be a family of immigrants (India or Pakistahn or similar) and the dad worked in NYC. He used the Long Island Rail Road to commute. The mom took the kids, two young boys in the car to pick up dad at the station. On the way home there is a terrible accident and the whole family dies.

It is believed that for some reason, the boys, who were about 5 & 7 did not understand they were dead. Their spirits returned the short distance to the house, where they would play with my friends little brothers toys. You would hear them turn over thru the toys in the little brothers toy chest, when no one was in that room. They like to use the finger paints on the back of a chalk board and made one drawing that was kept.. I saw the same drawing on the back of the board appear on a poster in Bill's room during a Ouija Board session. The center room is where the spirits tended to stay and the lock on the door had been changed a couple of times, but at night you could not get the door to open on the first try.

Many nights at 9pm there would be 2 knocks a pause, and then a third. Friends have been there when the mailbox lid was slammed up and down to make a loud clatter and Bill who was one step from the door opened it and no one was there.

THe house had been remodeled at one time, and the 2nd floor was seperated since the stairweel had been removed. You had to take a ladder to the widow to get in up there. There was some oods and ends stored up there. In the basement the old oil tank room as bricked off, you could see in at the top, but not get in.

So the ghosts were not unfriendly, were sometimes playful and it would get erie /creepy sometimes at night.

Boo!

I fell asleep watching Unsolved Mysteries last night, the "Ghosts" edition.

I've never believed in ghosts, but my mother does, and she loves them, so I grew up w/every little oddity in the house being attributed to our local haunter.

Oh, there goes Bob, again.
