In addition to the text, the woodcuts are tremendous. They were quite the rage in early 20th-century Germany: One of several cultural revivals meant to inspire nationalistic pride and to harken back to the days of the master-craftsman. What's interesting to me is that this idea of craft is here combined with unabashed enthusiasm for the machine, which yields a wonderful melding of tradition and innovation. Good stuff!

Charles, Thanks too! Appears Schulpig had great appreciation for the mix of man and machine. This time period (between WWI and WWII) marked the Zenith of hat making, at least in my opinion.

Great flea market finds, Manfred. I thought I could find some good hats here in Denmark via flea markets and thrift stores, but your finds are truly wonderful.

Here's my latest thrift store find, a Tonak Sirius. By the markings on the label and inside of the sweatband, it must be from 1972. it's been well looked after.





The dark blue marking on the leather on the inside of the sweatband must surely mean the hat is from 1972.



The pale blue marking on the inside label suggests the hat was bought and sold on the 15th of February 1973.

C. G. Wilke "Haar Rival", 60cm, 168g, probably late 1920s maybe early 1930s. This is a great Stiff Felt with a fantastic finish and a interesting bow design. It measures closer to 61cm so a big one.

C.G. Wilke "Bürstel Electra", 58cm, Open Crown 6 inches, Brim 2 1/4 inches probably later 1930s. I received this fantastic gray Wilke Velour via trade with Fastuni (Armin). The Velour finish is really nice and it still has the original paper size label. It originally had a Crease Clip/Holder. I could tell by the wear on the liner label and the remnants of a very sharp center crease. This hat has already been posted but these new photos are more accurate color wise. Also a really great model name. C.G. Wilke like use interesting model names.

In my opinion the best logo I have seen!

Being such a large size for the day, I wonder if this was a special order? How many larger hats do you find? If I remember correctly, most of your collection ranges from 56 -59.

Harv, I would say most of my hats are 58cm followed by 59cm. I have some smaller sized hats but they are just collector pieces. I do have / had some 60cm hats but they are harder to find. This Wilke "Haar Rival" Stiff Felt was marked 60cm but it was Conformed (manipulated stretched) into a larger size (also shape). I mentioned this because a while back in a Custom Hatter related thread I made the point that Formillion were only used for Stiff Felt and Top Hats because most Soft Felts would not have enough stiffness. Also that there will be some Brim distortion after the process.
