I am looking for a pre 1918 Austrian hat. I would prefer a Homburg style but a fedora or bowler would work. This would not be for wearing, so size and condition does not matter. Maker does not matter either as long as it is Austrian (or Hungarian) pre 1918. I have found a couple top hats, but that won't work for what I need.

Can anyone point me in a good direction to search? Thanks in advance!!

Good luck; finding any hat 100+ years old can be difficult.

Matt, I have seen diagonal split liners like this before but not from JHS.

Here is a JHS "Standard" liner that has some similarities.

This Brüder Böhm "Bristol" is very similar.

This "Corona" Velour has a diagonal split liner.

It's very difficult to find pre WWII Soft Felt Hats from Austrian Hat companies and nearly impossible to find pre WWI Soft Felt Hats. Your best bet is a Stiff Felt Hat and the smaller the size the better. What is your hat size?

J. Hückel ´s Söhne "Alpha" "Seal Velour", French Point Size 5, Brim 2 1/4 inches, Crown Open 6 inches possibly mid 1930s. The greenish gray "Alpha" "Seal Velour" is fantastic and easily dry creases. Really like the contrasting blue Zig-Zag stitching on the silk liner. (Clicking on photos might improve resolution.)

Steve, that is just one fantastic looking JHS. Again, I can almost feel the velour felt. Looks super, bet it sits so well.

It's so hard to capture the right colour of the felt of a hat, Steve. Perhaps that's the beauty of the felt, and the allure of the hat.

Stunning example. The gray and silver velour models JHS produced in particular seem to have an abundance of color changes in natural lighting.

Garrett, Thanks! I could be wrong about the color. I will eventually take some photos outside. I should put a visual list together of the JHS "F" (Farbe/Color) numbers.

I just discovered that the JHS "Alpha" "Seal Velour" has the same "F" (Farbe/Color) number "997" as my JHS "Superior" "Crystall Velour".

With flash the internal color looks about the same. I only have a flash photo of the exterior of JHS "Superior" "Crystall Velour" so I will take an external flash photo of the JHS "Alpha" "Seal Velour".

With flash the JHS "Alpha" "Seal Velour" color is definitely similar to the JHS "Superior" "Crystall Velour" with flash. JHS "Superior" "Crystall Velour" has more gloss because the nap is longer. JHS "Seal Velour" is usually more upright “open” Velour so more difficult to produce gloss. I think the flash shows off the Velour better.

Garrett, I also used a different camera (my old camera) for JHS "Superior" "Crystall Velour". I will take photos of it tomorrow with the same camera as the JHS "Alpha" "Seal Velour".

Both super examples of pre war JHS quality, Steve. Everyone should have at least one or two in their collection. Outstanding hats.
