German & Austrian Hutmachers

Anton Peschel Neutitschein, 57 cm, 140 grams, possibly later 1920s. This is the only (and one other on FL) complete branded APN Stiff or Soft Felt Hat I have so a very rare find. The felt is very similar to JHS Stiff Felts but that makes sense because they were very close neighbors. I really like the dimensions + form and it actually fits so that is an added bonus.

Why is it Peschels of any age are hard to find? I have one, probably 1950s. Would love more. Especially an APN one.

Steve, I think with APN they lost their German and Austrian markets after WWI so finding anything from those markets prior to WWI would be next to impossible. Czechoslovakia restricted exports to Germany and Austria post WWI. JHS setup a factory in Ratibor Silesia Germany to get around the situation. APN exported to America from about 1910 and there are handful of examples here and on my website but I believe that are only two that are APN branded. APN exported elsewhere but I haven't seen any examples.

I come across good number of post WWII Anton Peschel Dinkelsbühl (West Germany) / APD Soft Felts but they are mostly Trachten Velours or Homburgs. APD exported to America but most were Tracthen Velours. APD was a small operation so nothing compared to pre WWII APN.

Thanks for the reply, Steve. I can't help thinking though that Peschel hats were made and are out there. Why don't they come up for sale? Possibly because they're too good to let go. I wouldn't let one go, but then again, not everyone enjoys hats like we do.

Steve, As I mentioned the APD (West Germany) that appear are mostly Trachten types and Homburgs. Soft Felt Dress styles are harder to find.

I very rarely see any APN Soft or Stiff Felt Hats. I believe my latest find is only APN Stiff Felt Hat I have ever encountered. There are probably some APN Soft and Stiff Felt Hats that go undetected because of no visible company mark.

Two very nice finds in a super colour, Manfred. I have a grey Stanton fedora. A very solid hat. I really like the back bow on the Wegener.

Thanks Steve. Stanton are good hats but plays in a cheaper league, wrongly. I saw that several times. I saw that many times how cheap this hat were sold.
The Wegener is a funny hat with his short brim and the backbow.
