Austrian hats from Apparel Arts 1937

Received this interesting article on Tyrolean hats from 1937. I think it has a English - Anglo American slant (ie no acknowledgment of previous influence -> see Fedora and Homburg, ect) to it but that is to be expected.

Hats were worn so high on the head back then. I would be 7 1/8 / 5 / 57cm in those times.

K & R Lembert

I found that Hutfabrik Lembert has a new website.

They have a interesting hat making video (in German) that shows the velour process. They have amazing array of antique blocks and flanges.

Today they only make hats for special order. I meant to visit the last time I was in Augsburg but some how didn't make it.

J. Hückel´s Söhne Wien Melone

This is the first one I have seen available labeled J. Hückel´s Söhne and probably pre WWI. Also the first I have seen made in Wien (Vienna).

The liner is removable and there is also a company logo on the felt.

Beautiful Bowler in fantastic condition. Here's the influential facade of the Vienna Secession Building of 1898 by Olbrich where you may see some common design elements with the liner.

From the period photo it appears that hat might be your size after all . A lot of air under the ears and looks identical in style and proportions.

Mayser Panama

This size 59cm Mayser Panama (Brisa weave Cuenca) is probably from the 1960s. I think the ribbon might have been altered and the sweat was reattached in hack like fashion. Also missing the Mayser patch inside the crown. Still I like the blocking (pseudo cowboy crease) and it fits. Nice super casual summer hat.

Modern German

This hat was carried from Germany to me, it is a sobereign hat, woven leather like ribbon, Gore-tex inside wich keep dry any time, 100 % fur felt, deep dark brown color, is a new and modern.

German and Austrians

Hi, best wishes for all brothers wich post in this page, most with Hat´s pasion, furthermore, even with culture pasion, many years in my life have passed using hats, so different trade marks, some famous and others unknown, but both with good look style, in our land there are some hat makers with own style, in fur felt, wool and straw, and this, I have proved visiting this page every day in few months.
I wish this "German and Austrians" thread doesn´t leave the space, because, my point of view says: They are a own line, over proud and special kind in finished.

K & R Lembert

I am not sure about this Lembert ? (Augsburg, Germany). It has a very short crown and is softer than a typical old Bowler. I have to think it goes back to the 1920s maybe earlier. When I posted it on the eBay thread a while ago someone thought it might be a school boy hat but it measures 58cm and actually fits me. If anyone has any idea what it is please comment. I am also checking around but haven't heard anything back yet.

Here is some info I got from my hatter friend in Augsburg regarding the Lembert Rieser posted above.

"Ries is an area in the north of Augsburg. People there had typical hats, called 'Rieser Hut'. That's why Lembert obviously called the Bowler trimmed
hat 'Ries'. (the shape) " As in the nearby Ries Crater (Nördlingen).

Hm, I would put it somewhere Trachetn-style. Like the short crowned toppers that were common. Here is some example, I found, as kind of a reference for my hypothesis.
