Sorry if this has been discussed previously but the missus and I have been talking about this for a while. The missus wears perfumes approriate to our period (which are very nice!) but my question is:

What aftershave scents / brands would be appropriate for chaps for the authentic Fedora Lounge aroma?

My initial thought was the likes of Brut or Old Spice, but they seem far too modern. I use Cool Water at the moment but its coming to the end of the bottle and I want some kind of 30s / 40s stylee aftershave next.

Any ideas?

Ages ago I dated a guy who wore the most delicious aftershave/cologne--I'd come home and there'd be a faint scent of it on my clothes, yum--and it brings back really nice memories of him. The problem is that I've lost touch with Tom over the years I don't know what the scent was. I've actually gone to men's fragrance counters to try and identify it because I loved it so much but no luck. I've been near 2 guys in public places who were wearing the same scent but I was too shy to ask what it was. I won't be if it happens again because it's driving me nuts!

Long story short; choose your fragrance wisely and you'll go a long way towards gals thinking happily about you 15 years later!

Ahem, Imoldfashioned, I think Mrs Bertie might have something to say about that lol

A decision has been made to temporarily go with 4711, by the way. Some kind soul realised that it was technically a unisex scent and offered it up... and there it was, gone!

Scent is such a personal thing... I remember my first "proper" boyfriend used to wear Kouros - look, it was 1986, okay! - I thought it smelt like furniture polish but yet it's still popular.

(By the way - I'm Mrs Bertie :) )

Oh, but you'd play the role of the "girlfriend" in the little story I related (wife is even better, mind), would that make it better? :)

4711 is a grand choice--I know a couple gals who use it too as you said.

Eek, 80's cologne--so heavy!

I have to say, my favourite, favourite scent on a chap is fresh air.... you know that wonderful scent that lingers when someone's been out in cold, clear, frosty air?

Or line-dried washing does it for me too....

For that old barber shop scent I like Bay Rum after shave.I like both the cheap stuff "Clubman" and the more expensive "Taylor of Old Bond Street"

Lilac Vegital should do the trick, I'd think!

My Dad wore Old Spice when I was a little girl, and I remember how much I loved the smell. I don't know if it was around in the 40's, but there's something about the smell of it that defines a "man" for me. I guess I'm just a Daddy's girl! :)

I've never used aftershave. I always finished my shave with a cold towel wrap, the colder the better.
