I have a dear friend who is in her mid-80s named Shirley.

She told me she and her husband met during WWII, they had 1 simple date and he was shipped back out, during his time away they wrote each other letters, lots of them,,, he was gone for nearly 2 yrs, when he returned, he popped the question, they married had 5 children and during their early married yrs she was an Army wife, few kids in tow and moved around,,, alot.

They spent nearly 60 yrs of marriage together up until he passed away 5 yrs ago.

It was Shirley, a true war bride that continues to inspire me with her 'love story' and I do believe that the purity and simplicity of their written communication's were key to getting to know each other.

I've grown up a lot, and I'm sure my tastes have changed. I used to want a women that could hold a conversation with me, but now I want a women that wants to be a wife.

Maybe it's a vintage londoner thing... there are certainly plenty of ankle biters around my locale! Or perhaps it's the the kind of thing a woman in her late 30s will say a lot in public because otherwise people will tend to assume I am wringing my hands desperate for a baby before my 'time runs out'!

On the child subject, I can't wait to have them (only 22) and my other half has to want children too. I don't want to be the kind of woman who forces the other one/tricks them into having a baby. I live about 20 mins from London and am vintage so maybe I'm the odd one out. To be honest I think it's because I'm an only child from a small family (mum, dad, me grandma) so I'm overcompensating. Anyway this was completelyfftopic: , but I do know many many vintage enthusiasts who don't want children. I wonder why that is.

I find that saying it doesn't stop those sorts of assumptions and comments. I've had "But what if you change your mind?" - to which I responded "What if you do? Are you going to give him back?" and my doctor wouldn't refer me for tubal ligation because my marriage might fail and I might meet someone who wanted children...

My observation is that people are looking for explanations after the fact and trying to figure out what happened. It seems to me that what attracts and holds is a combination of attributes that works at that time. At a different time, a different combination may work.

I think this is very true. And explains why people can fall in love more than once, and have more than one successful relationship!

I'm well into my 40s, and nearly every girl/woman I've been involved with had the following:
1. red or auburn hair
2. freckles
3. green or hazel eyes

The freckles are the absolute deal-breaker, no freckles, I won't give her a second look. A dash of freckles across the bridge of her nose, and the tops of her shoulders is OK, but a sprinkling of them all over is better.

I hope that I'm not being shallow, that's just my preference.

This post made me quite happy! I'm covered in freckles and I've always been told that guys don't find them appealing! So it's nice to know there's some gents out there who don't mind a freckled lady (especially one freckled all over).

Well, it's the look that initially draws you in, but I don't have a particular "type". It is more a matter of the whole package, personality, intelligence, humor...although physical attraction is important, that can be enhanced or diminished by the level of intelligence and wit. The most attractive features of a woman for me are 1. Intelligence 2. Wit/personality 3. Looks (which like I said above are subjective and can be very dependant upon 1 and 2.

I was trying to figure out just what it was about a woman's appearance that attracted me and I have to say it seems I was looking for something that told me she was happy with herself. Quite subjective I know, but I still notice when any person seems secure in what she/he is.

I guess I just didn't want to deal with someone who came with a built-in set of issues that were going to become my issues.

I can only assume that it is some sort of inability those who want to breed have to comprehend those of us who don't. Cuts both ways, too - I find myself genuinely unable to comprehend, for example, why it makes any difference to someone to have a child which is biologically their own as opposed to adopting a newborn, say. I guess I just don't have that need to pass on my genetic material, and nature will wipe my genes out of the pool. [huh] Fine with me.

I think it's fine for the woman to make the first move, though I don't believe it's necessary. Depends on the mix of other factors, like if a guy is naturally shy and just needs a nudge from a more extroverted woman.
