Frye"Arkansas Brogue"

I don`t know if anyone has posted this thread if so disregard it.I stumbled across a very nice boot by the Frye Company,the Arkansas Brogue.They are not that expensive considering what you are getting.Frye, I believe is one of the oldest shoe mfg still in existance today.I know some of their line is not made in America,but that`s another topic.Has anyone bought a pair?either the boot or shoe and your comments if you please.It does seem to fit the bill for a good sturdy shoe that can be worn with many styles of clothing.Brian....

Frye boots have always seemed a bit "off" to me. And I disklike where they stick their logo.

Sadly, there are UK makers with higher quality products that are also better styled (in my opinion). The prices are competitive as well.

For that $388 range, one could purchase a pair of Trickers and get a pair that is literally 2x nicer.

As an alternative, Alfred Aargent also has some very nice products.

Triker is a nice boot I will say...But I do like the Frye`s a little more...would look good with an old pair of bib overalls..

C&J will last a lifetime.

These look pretty good, but the William Lennon Derby boot is a superior product, and it will cost you $250 out the door and shipped to the USA. If you're in Great Britain, I believe the shipping is free, saving another $50.

These look pretty good, but the William Lennon Derby boot is a superior product, and it will cost you $250 out the door and shipped to the USA. If you're in Great Britain, I believe the shipping is free, saving another $50.

The C&J is a much superior product. You may like the WL boot and that is certainly a fine preference, but quality-wise, the C&J is much nicer leather-wise and in construction. Not close.

The Trickers are great boots (and shoes), but always look so clunky IMO.

forefoot can tend to be a touch bulbous. I have my pairs done in the 5 fitting rather than the siz because it is a bit sleeker. Still "clunky" though.

Are they automatically inferior because they are from Frye or American made ?

I don't doubt the excellence of the of the other boots referenced.

You assume that "no one has a pair of Frye boots or oxfords". In fact, I have experienced 2 modern pairs over the past 18 months. One was sold and the other was "deconstructed" with a reciprocating saw.

Also, you assume that Frye still makes their own shoes and boots in the USA. One of the pairs I had was made in Mexico, and the other was a USA made pair. The USA pair was much nicer, but still no comparison to the Trickers or C&J (of which I have owned many of both). The 1960's Frye boots I have handled were a much superior product to those made today.

I don't think Northampton benchgrade are all that better than the top US makers. Handgrade is a different story......

What is a "top US maker"? You KNOW I LOVE the US makers, and WISH they were still good. Allen Edmonds vary so much in quality from shoe to shoe it's not even funny. I see loose thread ends, slightly off-centered stitches and the like. That's not the real problem, though. It's the LEATHER! AE uses so much corrected grain leather now. AND it's not even "good" CG. The creasing is bad. The quality of leather between C&J, Trickers, and the other "mid-range" UK makers is where the differences get huge.

When it comes to Shell, Alden still has some excellent materials. Can't argue that their shell isn't the best there is for the price. LOTSA colors as well.

I don`t think there really has been a top notch American shoe maker in some years. It seems so many makers have fallen down on quality.The good old work ethic in this country is waining.That`s just my 2 cents.Brian.
