I was talking with my cobbler about leather recently. He believes that confinement, antibiotics, growth hormone, artificial feed supplements, in essence everything that effects meat has an equally deleterious effect on leathers. This is wholly apart from the use of CG. It seems the US has gone from the Mecca of leather to also ran. If a great shoe starts with great leather (what we had in abundance in years past), and that is combined with large numbers of great craftsmen, then maybe US shoemaking is on its last legs. I wonder if, for their best shoes, Alden imports leather from Argentina, Brazil, or parts of Europe?
