A few weeks ago while walking in midtown Manhattan one evening, a couple of fellows with heavy Italian accents in a parked late model SUV ask me for directions to the Lincoln Tunnel. After giving them directions, the driver engages me in small talk and gives me a story that they are heading back to Italy from a trade show at the Javitts Convention Center and don't want to bring back some items that they'll have to pay taxes on, so they'll give them to me for FREE!
He proceeds to show me a short black leather jacket that retails for
"$1400.00" which he'll give to me FREE!
He then displays a 3/4 length black leather jacket that retails for "$1700.00" which he'll give to me FREE!
Lastly comes a brown suede jacket that retails for "$800.00" He asks what will I give him for that jacket alone and he'll throw in the other 2 jackets "for FREE!"
I offer him the $60.00 or so dollars that I have on me and when he declines to accept that and I decline to go to an ATM to get any more money...he just drives off.

Last night, while walking in midtown Manhattan a block or so from the last encounter, a fellow in a parked late model SUV asks me "Parle Italiano?"...
I say "No". He asks me for directions to the Queensborough Bridge.
I didn't make the connection immediately.
I give him directions and he starts to engage me in small talk and asks me "Are you a businessman?" :p
I respond..."Why? Do you have some Armani jackets you want to give to me for free?" :eusa_clap
He then cursed me out in Italian (THAT much Italian I understood!) and drove away.

How lucky am I to have been offered this amazing deal twice in one month?!lol

Was a very similar scam to this done as part of a UK TV Show (The Hustle, I think) a few years back - salesman at car service station supposedly on way back from somewhere, offering virtually worthless items for next to nothing, as long as you pay big for the best worthless item, a highly rare Gullibleskin Leather Jacket, or some such item.

I buy everything out of the trunks of cars. According to the friendly sales staff, big box stores, websites, and warehouse clubs are overrated and overpriced. Apparently, the real savings are in goods that have fallen off the backs of trucks. I got a genuine Romex watch and a real Magnetbox tv for under $300 each. (credit given to the Simpsons)

Unfortunately, I've completely missed out on that opportunity. I need to get out more - but I've been busy checking my account for the $10,000,000 that's being wired into it from the Nigerian government.

I got a low cost Armani Polo shit at a store called "Stupid Prices" Original price tag 100 bucks (for a polo shirt:eek: ) Stupid prices, price 12 bucks. Even has a "certificate of authenticity" bead chained to the "made in hong kong" dry clean tag.

no trunks here

In this country they operate from white vans, and it's more often fake Hi-fi speakers that are 'left over' from an inaccurate delivery, or power tools etc.
I did hear of the jacket scam once though, they even turn up in country towns trying to fleece us bumpkins, not realising that some of us might have actually been over the next ridge at some point in our lives, and come across dodgy mockneys and Gypsies before in our travels.
I use the term Gypsies advisedly, the consumer affairs dept recently warned against gangs of Rom speakers from the UK moving up and down the coast fleecing small communities with all sorts of scams.

sorry bassman. You may need to wash your forehead or something. You may have "sucker" written or something.
I think with this economy we will be seeing more scammers. The real ones in the banking is putting these street guys to shame though.
This thread has me rolling on the floor. So funny.

Exact same thing

That exact scenario happened to me at Broadway and 72nd St last year. The guy even gave me his business card. The address was a real place in the fashion district of Milan. He wanted directions to JFK so he could make his plane. I was totally uninterested in anything free, and as soon as he saw this he zipped back into his SUV and took off like a bat outta hell.

I was working late one night, and as I was leaving an atractive young lady asked if I had change for a hundred $ bill. I saw two guys hiding in the shadows. I laughed and said "do you think I would be working so late if I had any money at all." I had a firm grip on my glock model 23 as I made my way to my car.
