Five Star Leather Jackets

bottom right is where I put coconut oil/beeswax conditioner. It darkened, but I don't like the texture. Anyway, was expecting it to be more natural/tan color like the website, but it's like a caramel brown. He's using flash photography and like I said, I wouldn't trust any color reference on there.

this piece is super thin and stretchy though. I wouldn't recommend. Maybe if he has in the premium thickness. From what I can gather, the thinner stuff is semi veg tanned.

the photo you posted of him measuring looks pretty good for color. not so red. If he's already constructed the jacket, good luck getting him to change now. Same thing happened to me with my giraffe collar. Charged me $30 to change.

Just be precise. I want the pockets placed 1 inch from the bottom, 3/4 inch off center of the zipper, etc. Collar needs to be X amount wide and should be stiff, floppy, whatever. Literally break your jacket down into pieces and give details on each piece. What kind/size zipper you want. Sleeves, how wide on the biceps, how wide on the forearms, how wide on the wrist opening. If you want even thickness on the leather everywhere, or do you want certain pieces thinner or thicker.

Last bit of advice on the design because this is what ultimately screwed up my job, don't trust the colors on his website. He's using flash photography and it's not capturing correctly. Don't assume red is red and green is green. I know it sounds like we're being super nerdy or picky, but you can go to the other thread and read about 20 pages of little "mistakes" that some of us wish we would have clarified.

Once you get all the design details, then you really need to make sure about your own measurements. Get your best 2 or 3 fitting jackets and lay them on the floor and take measurements of the key area (p2p, shoulder, back length you want, neck circumference, sleeve length, etc.). Take pics of the tape so it's clear when you say I want 23 p2p, he can look at that photo and see how your 23 was referenced.

I would go all in on the leather. That's not going to affect his ability to nail the design. Last thing you want is for him to do a good job and then not be happy with the leather and you have to start all over again. He's done some nice detail work. Look up Jonesey's Sunset jacket. That had a lot of detail. So I don't think that's going to be the main concern. But I wouldn't get anything less than the premium goat or premium steer/cow.

The grain on mine is tighter and more goatlike on some panels and looser and deeper on others. I find the mix really cool.

nice. Great idea. I tried to get this when he shipped out my jacket, but he didn't look at the details I asked for. I wanted samples of the knitting colors, sheep skin, etc. He sent the basic leather stuff (but no buffalo or distressed versions). So, like everything else, just be clear with him what he needs to send out.

That’s a superb idea. Would be great to get a feel for the hides and see the true colors in person.

Can you assess its thickness compared to other leathers you have handled??? Is it similar to cow/steer hide being that it's bovine?? What would you say is it's closest comparison??? I'm really curious about this hide because.........THAT GRAINING

Ton, Can you possibly tip your hand on your upcoming project for us dreamers still yearning to order a custom piece??? What are you basing this one on?????? The suspense is killing me!! Especially since you teased you are raising the difficulty bar on this next one. I have been wavering on what kind of details are realistically in Shawn's wheelhouse. Would a center back pleat (I believe Jonesy may have gone this route) be too ambitious and just inviting disappointment??? How about front piping or as Aero refers to it, "deep cord effect"??? I don't know how big to go on some of these details that I really like in jackets.

I'm sure we'd all love to see what you got up your sleeve for this one. Its crazy. I literally fall asleep dreaming up possible custom jacket details now. I get distracted even watching TV thinking about possibilites. I go back and forth between going for a solid repro of a known vintage jacket a la your All Weather, OR doing an amalgamation of all of my favorite details from vintage jackets and seeing if they can get them all done and have the jacket not look to busy or tacky.

But I digress........ If you could indulge us as to what you are basing your next one on....that would clearly be bitchen .

I was trying to find your pics from this jacket and couldn't figure out which thread they were in: New Jackets Coming or the Five Star. I searched your name to find your posts but I musta done it wrong because I had no success finding your jacket.

Can you tell me where your posts on this baby are??? Is this the premium Goat?????? I'm interested in having a Center Back Pleat incorporated into a customish design and was really wondering how yours turned out and whether it gets sorta funky shaped after wearing it some. I'm sure you haven't put many miles on it but any more info you can provide or direct me back to your post when you got the jacket---I'd appreciate it. As far as I know, (and we haven't seen Ton's Top Secret incoming 5 Star)--you are the only one who went with a back pleat AND A SUNRISE BACK TOO no less!!!!

Thanks man. Your ambitious endeavor paid off well I'd say. I really want to see and hear from everyone's experiences with 5 Star. I won't be able to place an order for a month or 2 I think but I love seeing what you guys are having done and hearing about your interactions with Shawn along the way. I would say the leather feels thinner when compared to my horse and cow leathers, but yet it feels substantial and drapes really well. If this came in non distressed versions I would buy more of it.

Oh this looks very promising indeed!!! I would include a measurement for the neckhole diameter, and one from the main zip to the collar point. I’d also include a measurement for the front drop. I can’t wait to see how this turns out. I will fire off my order for one instantly.
