I just hope I have been fair and balanced.

I think you were honest and accountable, which is better than fair and balance. You had an understandable gripe and expressed as such, but you also took responsibility by answering all questions honestly and openly where alot of people would've took their ball and went home, especially on the internet.

This could've been left at a he said she said situation, as is so often the case. But you stepped up and now we're all much better for it.

I agree, but I also think those conversations should remain a private matter between the customer and the maker. Only in case the maker is absolutely unreasonable and totally unwilling to find a solution that works for both parties, only then would I vent my frustration in public. That is if there was no blame on me.
Like in @JustinW case with Simmonsbilt.

Since this is partially on you + 5* didn't seem to be unwilling to work out a solution, I think it's unfair of you to settle this dispute here on this forum.

5* knows this will hurt their business so of course they were going to be extra accommodating. But I don't think it's fair of you to 'abuse' the power of the forum in this case.

Disagree totally MM. I had no intention of influencing Shawn's actions, just reporting my experiences. But even if I did intend to influence him, so what? I think you will also note that I was surprised rather than indignant and that my tone was reasonable. I hope I have been fair and balanced.

wow - that russet sheepskin looks terrific! In re my 5 star A-1, I was sent photos with the jacket laying completely flat with a tape measure over the important areas. I think this is SOP for custom.

I didnt say anything about your tone. It's just that you addressed these issues publicly before you and Shawn worked out a solution. I don't think that's fair. But that's just my opinion. I guess we agree to disagree.

Agreed. With all due respect toward everyone involved, the exact point behind this thread was unclear to me from the beginning as, from my understanding, 5* was immediately willing to work something out - plus the impression I got Seb's posts was that he didn't seem overly annoyed by the way the jacket turned out so...

It's not like the maker messed everything up, refused to issue a full refund and then stopped responding altogether.

Sorry, but why does it require to have to go public with a problem to get a proper response? I ask this rhetorically as I know the answer, but it really is a shame. This is similar to the Simmons Bilt thread where you get one response (actually he got none) and then when it's clear there might be bad press, you get another.

Hey good for Seb, glad he got a more appropriate response now. But why did it have to go that far?

I did not get this "great customer response". Shawn stopped emailing and never really answered some of my questions or offered a solution. I didn't make a big deal about it here because several people had jackets in queue and I didn't want to be the Debbie Downer. I assumed it was just a fluke and as I mentioned I still got a nice jacket, but there were flaws no doubt and it wasn't what I ordered. I didn't start negatively bashing the company or issuing buyer beware. In fact the opposite. I always responded with they are nice jackets, just make sure to be on top of all the details and get better photos for things like colors especially because the website was not good for these.

You can check my posts. In fact, look at who started this particular thread. You might be surprised. I wanted to support the company and in the process have my fellow TFLers get some good jackets. But if this company or any other needs borderline cancel culture before they respond, it's a slippery slope.

I hear what you are saying and i get where you are coming from. I would just say this: 5*, according to Shawn, has over 100 employees and works with other brands making jackets. It seems like a pretty good size operation if that is the case. Perhaps there are times when communications fail unintentionally? Maybe now is a good time for you to reach out to Shawn again about your jacket issues? Good luck!

From what I recall Seb was writing about the problem after Shawn had “offered” him the solution of a discount on the next order. That was a pretty lame attempt at solving the problem and I think that is what upset Seb more than the initial mistakes with the order.
Furthermore, I don’t think Seb (nor anyone else here) are doing anything wrong by sharing their experiences, both good and bad, with 5*. This allows everyone to learn more about this new maker and for the most part the feedback has been very positive.

From what I understood, Seb was still working on a solution with shawn. See one of his last comments before Shawn chimed in here on TFL:

I'd be very surprised if I got anything more than a moderate discount.

I agree that a minor discount would not have been a fair / satisfying solution to this major problem (the zipper). But I also think a company should be given the opportunity to make things right, before bad experiences are shared on the internet.

I like that Shawn is disclosing the process, I wish this came sooner and not because of a mistake. I’m glad he’s willing to work with @Seb Lucas and I hope they figure something out.

Now, @FIVESTAR LEATHER, Please ship all your jackets in boxes!
Dear @handymike

Thanks for your suggestions, and totally agree with you, the only concern is that the flyer packaging is low cost, we charge only 30$ so far for shipping a jacket in flyer, but if we use the Box Packaging cost will rose to 60-70$ which will be extra burden on buyers, so all those buyers who demands the Box Packaging we send all their parcels in Boxes.

Best Regards

Shawn

Last goat for the herd arrived today. Another well built Halfbelt with a monster thick mouton collar. I chose the grey brown mouton and love it. Overall I couldn’t be happier with my 5 Star repro Halfbelts. All three are unique, well built and a delight to wear. Thank you Shawn!
