I like the look of this.

This is the jacket I’m looking to replicate, the white suede jacket Steve Mcqueen wore in Wanted Dead or Alive.

Edit: it doesn't have to be white, but I would prefer a lighter color.

The jacket from the show is a completely different type of jacket from the RMC you got and Aero you’re considering, which are based on a 60s Levi’s design (it might even be an overshirt, because the pocket layout is pretty similar to the shirts he wears in it) and there’s a decent chance it isn’t leather, either. Maybe bedford cord?

How did you find that jacket? What gets me is the collar; I seem to remember it being knit like a bomber jacket.

I have no clue what the collar is. But this is the jacket I’m after. I figured that I couldn't be too far off since the McCoys jacket was called the Western jacket. It definitely looks like a trimmer cut than the new McCoys, don’t you think?

Ah, no. RMC uses "western" as a name there because it's based on a Levi's 1960s denim/leather jacket. But again I don't think the issue with the RMC jacket was cut; it's that to get a long enough length for your height from a Japanese brand, it ends up being way too big across the board. The collar is just a standard collar, worn popped up to protect the neck.

Sometimes you see the type of jacket you're looking for (as Marc linked an example of) labeled a welding jacket. I have one that I picked up from the Schott factory.

What is that and where might I find it?

(IMO) you don't want this jacket. It's going to turn pink and then meat-red. Very different from your desired look.

Can you recommend an alternative? I’m guessing the white fades?

It’s an undyed, untreated veg tan leather so it’ll go tan then meat red. Some people like that but it’s definitely not the color scheme you’re looking for.

Johnson Leathers in SF has Jean jacket style patterns and any leather you can dream of. They’re hard to beat for custom sizing. Hell maybe they’ve even reproed this exact vintage design Marc linked and can make it up for you in a lighter weight suede they have on hand, complete with brown leather collar. It might be a fairly simple matter of moving the pockets lower.

The only advice I’d add with Johnson is to trust them on sizing more than any TFL advice because as good as the people here are, and they’re better than most sales staff, the Johnson team are masters at fit. If I’d gone with my preconceptions rather than Alan’s advice I wouldn’t have the perfect fit my jacket from them has.

Awesome I’ll give them a try. Should I just search Johnson Leathers or do you want to drop a link?

Search them and give them a call. They’re mostly business to business and an OEM manufacturer so their retail website is low priority. Check out their Instagram for examples of their jackets (you’ll see ones that belong to a bunch of us!)

EBay and Google.
Buying a 60 year old jacket in a specific size takes a different approach than buying an off the rack jacket that's readily available today.

Often times sellers themselves don't know what it is that they're selling so they simply list it as 'vintage American jacket'. If you really want one of these you'll have to go through hundreds of ebay / etsy / depop / vinted / Facebook marketplace / Instagram listings on a daily basis.
