So I picked up this one:

Sadly it did not work out the best. Will Zach had no idea, nor did I, of what would arrive. In the photos the grain, patina and leather combined all looked quite good. I sure thought so indeed so I took the chance at the Buy it now price (which was not that much).

When I recieved it, it was Very Dirty, as in, I won't even try this old jacket on before it goes in the wash. I know it needed the main zipper repaired. Turns out all but 2 zippers on the jacket were toast. I wish I would have had a clear pipe on the drain of my washer for this one. Or maybe not.

Post wash, and air drying most of the weekend with a fan on low nearby, everything seemed pretty OK. There was clearly someting down deep inside the lining and the rear kidney panel that I could not identify, felt like a curled over piece of inner leather possibly used as a stiffening item for that kidney panel.

Problems took over after I took the photos below - "dried out". I tried some ligther leather conditioner only to discover it would take none of that. Only at this point did I really look at the white peaks showing through at corners and around the action back, elbows of the sleeves, etc. This is a Painted leather jacket! Yes, painted...

So no amount of attempting to re-soften that leather would do any good in my book. So here I have a jacket with 4-broken zippers, holes in the lining and an un-idenitifed foreign object quite noticable inside the bottom of the lining, and Painted, cracking leather getting drier as it sits after my "wash" of it. Oops.

It was time to bail out. This along with several other items went into a bag and were carted off to our local Salvation Army as-is store for donation. Maybe someone can think of some use for it, harvest a few zippers, etc. At the end of the day not a big loss, but several lesson's learned. Here are a few photos post-wash and dried at ambient temp for ~36 hours:
