A Cocktail Before Dying...

The things you can do with an old angle poise desk lamp, curtains, some incense sticks and a bit of noirish music. Sure it sucks (I'm no professional and don't have the kit, and wouldn't know how to use it if I had! [huh] ), there's no script, just whatever came to mind (frightening the rubbish inside my noggin eh!!), but...I had fun just seeing what my little camera video function could accomplish, and what I could do with it (it's all hit or miss - but I've learnt a few things!!). Shouldn't think Tom or Brad have anything to fear...;)

Paddy, outstanding! I thought it was going to be a youtube clip from a WB noir! The hat, the lapels, the lighting. When the monologue starts, all I could think of was Miller's Crossing: The Early Years.

Great job!

Very good indeed Paddy. I watched it with the sound off (at work), so I can't comment on the audio, but the visuals are quite believable. They look great and I think it was done very well, great way to use what you have at hand. :eusa_clap

Noir music

There's a lot of good film noir music out there if you search for it. Great background music when having cocktails at home with a few pals.

My pants look like they are on FIRE...!

I tried to get that 'smokey' feel to the scene and so had incense sticks burning at my feet :eusa_doh: But all it looks like is that my pants are on fire  haha!!

So HOW does one get that curling smokey effect for the camera? Guys - I'm a pure novice at this, honestly, this is so cobbled together with desk lamps and stuff, but I do find it interesting!! and FUN.

I'd say get the incense closer to where a cigarette of cigar would be ashtray height on a table and gave a gentle waft with a manilla folder or something to move the smoke the way you want. If you can get a clear lens filter for your camera you can smear the very outside with a little vaseline to make it appear hazy.

I'm a huge fan of Japanese Noir; I just ordered a box set and a copy of "Tokyo Drifter". After seeing Tokyo Drifter for the first time, I came to the conclusion that Quentin Tarantino is a plaigarizing, copycat schmuck.

Just an opinion.

Anyway, the best of these films are amazing.

There was a film festival of Japanese Noir at the local repetory theatre, Pacific Cinemateque. I was hooked!

This is the box set I'm talking about. Terrific stuff.

This one has a great soundtrack.

I saw "He Walked by Night" (1948) last night - Richard Basehart, Scott Brady. I was struck by how strongly its pursuit of villain and ending resembles that of "The Third Man." The Reed classic was made 18-24 months after "He Walked by Night." Has anyone knowledge whether Graham Greene or Carol Reed was influenced by the earlier crime-noir? Or speculation?

There has been speculation regarding what you've brought up, but I've never read or heard of any convincing proof that Reed was influenced by the film. None-the-less, He Walked by Night was sort of a milestone movie because it was one of the first (if not the first) to showcase realistic police procedures, and to feature more realistic characterizations than did most other films that came before it. In addition, it directly influenced the creation of the Dragnet radio program (and later TV show), and Jack Webb actually had his first "significant" role in this film. In case you didn't know, Anthony Mann assisted in directing (uncredited), and the character of Roy Martin is based on a real killer who was actually captured alive, evaded the death penalty with a plea of insanity, and was later released!

The Wages Of Fear

One of my all time favourites from the 50's. It's a French film and the one that made Yves Montand an international star. It's basically about desperate men volunteering to deliver two truckloads of (very volatile) explosives across a desert to extinguish a fire at an oil well- it's deadly serious in mood, rough, tough and dramatic, with an ending worthy of Hitchcock. My DVD quotes Empire magazine saying of it : 'non-ownership is inexcusable'.

Another nice one, Paddy! Was that your classic car in the video? That's a beauty!

Big, big Noir fan here, my DVD collection is getting a bit crazy! I re-visited Detour last week, and Out Of The Past a few days ago. Just saw Impact for the first time actually the other night, it was ok. I think this weekend I am in the mood for a little Double Indemnity, and maybe Where The Sidewalk Ends. :)

I just got a copy on DVD of Hell's Half Acre with Marie Windsor, the print is so-so, but it's not too bad. There are so many good movies out there that have not been restored and re-released it's a shame, because eventually it will be too late if the original prints are allowed to deteriorate further.
