When I see a fez, I think of an animal club (Elks, Moose, Water Buffalo, etc) convention with misbehaving husbands, poker, cheap cigars, too much food and prostitutes.
A fez reminds me of the Flintstones and the Loyal Waterbuffaloes as well.
The image is one I got from an old magazine. It is a 1944 WWII era Stetson hat ad. Stetson had plenty of them during the war---more focused on Keep it Under Your Stetson than this one though. I think you can just right click on this image and save it to your computer. Yep, I just tried it and it works for me. :cheers1:
I am not sure about drinking a Martini wearing a fez. I never saw Morocco Mole drinking a Martini wearing a fez.
A few years back I found myself in Fez, Morocco.
There is, indeed, a fez factory there. But most of
the fezes I saw were made in China or Czech Republic.
I did not end up bringing one home.
A friend brought one home from Egypt. It looked beautiful
in the salesman's hands. But when he got home and unwrapped
it he found that the man had switched him for a beat up piece
of crap!
I've been trying to get a nice fez. The lady at the Arabian Baazar tried to get one for me on her last visit to Syria, but they sent the wrong size and it was not the quality she asked for. We're going to try again next time she travels.
My wife is Moroccan and I actually got married while wearing a fez that her family bought for me. It was one of the nicer ones with a real horse hair tassel. I've been to Fez many times and there are always vendors hawking the hats in the medina and outside the royal palace. The quality is either very poor or very good. I think, in the past, fezes were more universally worn, kind of like fedoras. Today, they seem more reserved for formal occassions, like a top hat. I wore mine with a suit and got many positive reactions from the locals in the street. I kind of had an old school look, Casablanca style. I've seen quite a few on the heads of businessmen types in Egypt, also.
I have seen many cheap fezes over the years......especially when someone spots mine......like any other hat once you learn what quality ones are like your impresion of the rest become less than polite.......most of what I have seen brought back from over sees makes costume fedoras look nice which really terrifys me.....
Okay, I've been doing a little research on the subject. For those of you who have real fezes, or have seen them, what are they made out of? Cheap ones I've come across are wool, and in fact, some not so cheap ones are also wool. Are they any other materials used?
I too bought a Fez in Morocco- Marakesh actually, quite a nice one- asked where to get a decent one and ended up getting it from a Tailor- the nice ones for the smart dressers.
I didn't buy one in Fez or Casablanca.
The Tonak ones look OK but not the same as the one I had- it had a self-tassle but was more square in aspect- flatter top and sides.
There are many different styles of Fez- from different towns and for different people and occasions- some of the more rigid ones are a finer felt and have a layer of horse-hair mesh type stuff in between the felt and lining- like old time cap stiffener. The soft ones are often unlined.
They're usually felted wool but I've heard of them being made from goat hair...
...strange but true. Plenty of goats over there-
I think I would prefer a goat one with stiff sloping sides, a flat top and a tassel. No beanie stem sticking out. In other words exactly like the ad. See? :cool2:
