Feet Up! The Work Boot Thread

hey dh66 what is the fit like on the iron ranger? I heard they run big.

I bought my normal size (11D) and they fit pretty good. Maybe a little roomier in the toe than my 8166 or 877s, but not enough to size down. They are really close fitting across the top of my foot, so even a half size smaller would probably be too tight. All in all I'm happy with the fit.
I'm wearing them with thick wool socks right now, and when summer comes, if anything maybe they'll be less tight on top of my foot.

Hope this helps.

Guess I should add, I've been wearing them to work, and have gotten several compliments on them. Even my wife said they looked nice, and she was way less than enthused that I had bought another pair of boots.

Here they are at almost a week in.

Here's a line up for comparison that I took when I got home. The I.R.s maybe a little bit longer, but not by much. Also bear in mind they are only a week old and the toes are still pretty flattened out. After a few months they will start to raise up on the ends like the other ones.

Just happened to be wearing my Alden 405 brown chromexcel boots while stumbling across this thread. I added some el cheapo insoles and they are comfortable! Almost like sneakers. Almost 2 years old and still trying to get them looking beat up. Using brown leather laces for now.

Nice Indys, bro! Must be the JCrew ones? Otherwise 403s, no?

Thanks! And I was mistaken, they are in fact Indy 403s, not 405s. Color is dark brown chromexcel, size 12D. Purchased from The Alden Shop San Francisco. I just found the original order confirmation in my email.

Cool man! I've owned a number of boots, and continue to obsess, but as much and as far as I look there's just something amazing about a pair of brown Indys. So classic and versatile. Can be worn with pretty much any era or style of clothing.

Those look mighty nice, Eyeball. I like the laces you put in them.
And +1 to what Bretron said about versatility.

Thanks dh66. The pair i wear the most and doesn't get much talk is my chippewa apache lug sole 6" boots. They look good fit good and are about $180.00 bucks.

I am familiar with those. Great looking and durable boots. I had a similar pair of black 8" Chippewas that I wore for years.

Alden 401. Bought them in San Francisco. This photo was taken when they were new. Now they look quite beat up and I like it much better...

Congrats on another killer pair. Also, if you're into those kinds of bracelets, there's a couple I know here in Miami that do really beautiful work: Tommy and Therese Turchin. If you google "Turchin Jewelers" you'll find them. Nice folks, too.

I have a couple pair of Danners and some real good pull ons. I wear em all in the mud, snow and ice and all other environs. I've always used Hubbard's boot grease. The beeswax pine tar combo keeps water out and keeps the leather from drying.

Picked up a pair of these Field N Forest 6" moc toe boots today on sale for $109.99 from Mills Fleet Farm. These are rebranded Thorogoods that are Union made in Wisconsin and have a Goodyear storm welt.

A note on sizing, these run big like most boots. For reference, I wear a 9D dress shoe, 10D tennis shoe, 8.5D on Alden's Tru balance last and I wound up going a full size down to an 8EE. I have a high instep and after trying an 8.5D and a 9D I found that those felt too big and there was a lot of heel slip (and I was wearing thick socks). The 8EE gave me that extra width and there was still plenty of room in the toe box to make them comfortable.

Overall I'm happy with my purchase. It was either go with Redwings or Chippewas, which are significantly more expensive, or go with the Thorogoods on sale. I'm looking forward to beating the crap out of these.
