And the fedora wins!

What a strange time the Truman-Eisenhower era was. Below is a suggestion from a government-sponsored book, "How to Survive an Atomic Bomb" (1949). Good news for us, eh?

Actually, it was the Mercury in the felt that had the same effect as lead at protecting the individual from the ill effects of radiation. A wind trolley provided some protection from the force of the blast... or something. :p

Abso-friggin'-lutely classic!

I knew a good lid had numerous benefits. Perhaps it was the Cravanette process that rendered the hats so effective against atomic blasts. Probably only worked if the brim has a Mode Edge.

Ooooh! Look at the sunrise! ...That's no sunrise...

This is great news! Now I know I've got more protection during my morning commute on the DC Metro. :eusa_booh Oh, the murcury felt also helps cut back on those government mind control experiments.:whistling ;)

Nuclear bombs are dangerous things, and I belive a country like CHINA will use them against us, and there are some dangerous things with the nuclear bomb, the fallout, the "brighter than light" flash, obvously the brigher than white flash will be the first thing you see, actually, it would be best NOT to see it,

Wear a hat and hurry home to get teh radiation pills, you know, part of your EMERGENCY PREPARNESS supplies, everyone has a kit, RIGHT?

Now we know why, after 1945, fedoras were made with such wide brims.

And after the Cuban Missile Crisis was averted, brims became increasingly narrow. I guess folks relaxed a bit.

Or they needed to fit through hatches in bomb shelters. ;)

Dog tags for elementary school students.

We used to practice "Stop, Drop and Cover" drills when I was in Elelmentary School. But when my brother (who is about 6 years older) was in school they issued dog tags to the kids with the factual reaasurance that if their bodies were horribly burned or destroyed from the blast the parents would have the peace of mind knowing what happened because the dogtags would survive. Wow what a relief for an eight year old, if you know what I mean.

If this is before your time, then you need to rent or borrow the classic film called "The Atomic Cafe" which is derived from those marvelous government and military films that tell you what to do in case of attack type documentaries. Sometimes you got to wonder if they were all on drugs when they made these, it is weirdsville. My favorite is when they were trying to change the term "FALLOUT" for the term "SUNSHINE UNITS". One kills you the other sounds like you need to go out and dance in it like "singing in the rain!"

I recall as a kid when there was still above ground testing in Nevada and how they reccomended what days to keep your kids inside til what was left of the radioactive mushroom cloud passed.

The Atomic Cafe is a great hit.
