Hey Dutchman, you've either been losing more weight or the 'stash makes your face look much thiner, what gives?

P.S. still waiting for pics of that colonial looking jacket!

I've been working on losing more weight...I've kinda hit a brick wall though, and have been at 215, not varying more than a couple of pounds any day, for months. I'd sure like to get 190 or so....

That sword is German (of course), and about 1750. Mass produced and you can see the flash line from where the guard was forged in a die.

That's what is called a "rifle shirt", or "hunting shirt" or "hunting frock". Caped and fringed wraparound thing. I don't have a decent photo of it at the moment. I have one planned for myself made of a herringbone hemp fabric that I will dye either gray or (gasp) brown, with logwood blue linen fringe....like I'll ever get around to making it... I have a LOT of fabric that is currently "ageing"...

:eek:fftopic: I am just curious and of course you don't have to answer... but what weight did you start at when you started losing? And was it just a change of diet or did you add exercise as well? [huh]

I had been as much as 260-something last year. I'm 6' 1" and a bit more tall. Right now I'm in better shape than I have ever been in my life. Down a shirt size and two pants sizes.

I get plenty of exercise where I work (at a lumberyard), though not lately...it's been real slow. Basically it's just eat less, which is even more important than "eating better", which is also important. WHEN you eat (what time of day) I think makes a difference too. But, after all is said and done, for the most part, it really does just all come down to calories. I DO need to exercise more, but I donwanna.

Here, do you want to see something really scary?

I'm 37 and have worn a beard consistently since I was about 18. I think it looks fine with a fedora. At least I feel more confident that I'm looking good when I'm wearing a nice hat, and that's (at least) half the battle.

<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/55751256@N00/1534261343/" title="resistol0601 by wn293, on Flickr"><img src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2412/1534261343_ec25ca0c72.jpg" width="400" height="500" alt="resistol0601" /></a>

I don't want to stray too far off the topic, but I'd also like to say I can relate to Dutchman's comments regarding weight loss. I'm 5'11" with a fairly stout frame and from my late teens to early 20s weighed in the 220-230 pound range. Mainly by changing my eating habits to eat less and, at the time more importantly better, in conjunction with more exercise, I brought that down to around 200 for a few years and felt much better. For me the most significant factor was just eating good unprocessed foods, simply prepared, at mealtime, and not eating junk food or eating whatever happened to be lying around (as I had always done growing up when someone else was buying the food).

Over the past few years I had gotten kind of lazy and my weight gradually crept up to around 220. This time it was more a factor of when and how much I was eating, rather than what I was eating. The when was probably the biggest factor - eating big meals too late in the evening. I also realized that as I get older I can't eat as much as I used to be able to without showing it, but also that I don't really need to eat as much - I just have been getting used to eating somewhat smaller portions. I'm not leaving myself hungry; it's just a matter of changing old habits.

Since last winter I've dropped about 20 pounds and am back to right around 200 and feel a lot better for it.

The best time to eat is in the morning and during the middle of the day when you're up and doing things. The worst time is late in the afternoon/evening when you're settled down....but it's easiest for me to not eat in the morning, and HARD to not want to eat in the evening....

Eh, all girls think they need to lose weight even if they don't! You look just fine. ;)

Wesne, I do like that hat. I just can't wear small brims like that...well, maybe it's just because I haven't really tried with the right hat yet.

Hey Dutchman [havent been ablw to call you Fat in a while] I am the same way about brims, I just cant wear a short brim. It seems as if I do not have a hat on if the brim is any shorter that 2 1\2.
But Wesne you do look great with a short brim. The glasses also add to the effect I think.

Thanks for the kind words about the hat, guys. It's a Resistol with the super-soft "Kitten Finish," in size 7 1/2, found for a quite reasonable price on eBay. One of my few auction scores. The listing and photos left something to be desired but I took a little gamble and ended up with a hat in very nice condition that just needed a little cleaning and TLC. It was pretty well out of shape when it arrived but it came back to life very nicely with some application of steam. The brim is about 2 1/8 inches. This hat feels great on my head and has been my daily wearer for the past couple of months. I've gotten some compliments on it, the most appreciated one probably being from female co-worker in her early twenties - "I like your hat. It suits you." :)

This is my first post on the Fedora Lounge, so be gentle. I've had a beard all my mature life and you'll never see me outside without a fedora. I also have long hair, tied in back. Wearing a fedora, a beard and long hair, dressing in vintage style and wearing a pocket watch is not so much about looking good as about being who I am. I respect the quality of life and the values of past ages. I'm just a vintage guy. I bet many of us here are the same.

I'm also a classical musician by profession. I think I must have been born too late.

Welcome to the Lounge, Alphornmaker (REE-koh-Lahhh!?). Being who you are is a basic Lounge premise. You'll fit right in! Fedoras, eh? Good for you, they are the mainstream of the place. But now you have to tell all about your vinatge gear, from the top down, such as, type of hat, (pictures are most pleasing), and your vinatge wardrobe on the whole. Looking forward to your future in this little corner of the world!

Digging up a 4-year-old thread here . . .

I look something like Dean, up in post 55, above, minus the glasses. Or maybe I should say my beard looks like his: neatly trimmed. My hair is thick and kept pretty short, though not Golden Era length by any means. Inspired by Robert Vaughn in "The Mind of Mr. Soames," I first grew a beard in the mid-70s, after I left home, and wore it until I had to go back to a mustache for a new job in 1978. Then I re-grew it in 1988, and have been hirsute ever since.

When I took up hats, it bothered me a little, since not many actors in the olden days, or now, wear beards. But I never considered shaving it. Recently I've thought about going to a goatee and mustache, or a half-beard like Robert Downey Jr.'s -- or Alan Rickman's in "Die Hard" -- but I haven't gotten up the nerve. Maybe it would make sense to do it in summer (which will be here in March).

Anyway, whether I'm wearing a Royal Stetson or an Open Road, I think I look great this way.
