Putting some more beat on the beater. Went camping with friends this weekend up in gold country at Malakoff Diggins state park. The park is preserving the historic site of the state's largest hydraulic gold mining operation. The valley just beyond the lookout fence post in the first photo is where the hillsides were cut out with huge hydraulic cannons. The process was of course an obvious environmental disaster, eventually flooding the Sacramento river basin and carrying silt down stream until it ended up in the SF bay. But now we have a nice campground near the Yuba river swimming holes.
