Our aim was to spend a nice lunch together in a restaurant that was already tried and approved for the quality of the gourmet proposal.
The cheerful company of Monica, Daniela and Daniele visited, awaiting lunch, the magnificent Parma.

The Baptistery, which dates back to 1200 and the same age Duomo

with numerous works of art including Antelami, the sculptor of the passage from Gothic to Romanesque

The visit was pleasant.
The typical restaurant with parmesan specialties was divine.
On the way back we stopped at Sabbioneta an "ideal city" of the Renaissance founded and built by Prince Vespasian Gonzaga in 1560

The occasion to return to Siena was Monica's meeting with a college student of passed days
The two old friends met in Bologna in the early eighties at the faculty of physics and mathematics. Their careers have gone together for a few years then everything has changed. Now he lives in Siena and teaches in Pisa, Monica is in Verona.
We have been guests in a magnificent palace ten meters from Piazza del Campo in the Selva district.
We reviewed the Sienese pictorial school scattered in a few hundred meters in the historic center.
In a gray Piazza del Campo and with a few tourists I decided to take a small photo tour on the Palio route. When, some of you on July 2 and August 16 will see the career in the square will have a clear photo guide

This is a fantastic hour to see what happened in Siena for the Palio

This is not so much “fedoras afield” but it seems the most appropriate place for this post. We’re just coming off a busy performance season in Asia. We do contemporary dance and experimental music and I had four performances in Delhi and three in Malaysia over the last few weeks. The cool thing was I had a chance to use the Akubra Fed IV and my vintage Champ to good effect. Here are some photos but many more are still being made public.

Nathaniel, I’d love to learn more about what you guys do. Great photos!

We’re a loose confederation of dancers, musicians and performing artists mostly from Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia. I’m pretty amateur myself but some of these folks do this full time. We had a one week intensive workshop just outside of New Delhi in collaboration with some Indian dancers then we moved the whole thing to Malaysia and just finished a weekend of performance. It was 65 artisist this year so there was a lot going on in three days.

We do it in the historic town of Melaka just a few hours north of Singapore in the ruins of a 400 year old Portuguese church. I had two solo performances and something like five collaborations this year. I’ve been focused on experimental music (mostly using voice/spoken word and violin) but this year I got into movement for a few pieces as well. The big weekend performance happens every year at the end of November in Melaka so if you’re in the area check us out. It’s the Melaka Arts and Performance Festival (MAPFest).

Here are a few more shots of other artists just to give you a taste of what’s going on. There are literally thousand of amazing images that come out of this event every year.

I don’t want to post too many because the images are also the property of the photographers but this should give you a feel for it at least. On Facebook and Instagram you can search (hashtag)Mapfest17 and find lots of good stuff.

Cheers,
Nathan

After three days in Siena with a sudden change of weather we started the road back to the south.
We drove through the ancient Via Cassia into the Val d'Orcia to Bagno Vignoni for four days of relax
Early in the morning from the window of our hotel
jza8mp.jpg

some minutes later with the first rays of sun
1zqc7.jpg

At the center of the village is the "Piazza delle sorgenti", a rectangular bath of sixteenth century, which contains a source of hot and steamy thermal water coming out of the underground foothills of volcanic origins
6td56p.jpg

From the Etruscan times and then from the Romans - as evidenced by the numerous archaeological finds - the baths of Bagno Vignoni were attended by illustrious men and women. Some movies have been filmed in this original environment
2s99nao.jpg

The waters that emerge from the spa begin to the steep slope of the Natural "Parco dei mulini"
2eoy5w9.jpg

Here, immersed in the Mediterranean vegetation, there are four medieval mills excavated in the rock that were very important to the local economy as the perennial thermal spring guaranteed their operation even in summer, when the other mills in the area were stopped due to the rivers dry
28o6li.jpg

The small lake at the end of the waterfall
5y9tv7.jpg

The sun is back after a few dark and windy days
2e58end.jpg

These are the views of the "Crete" around Siena
b8002w.jpg

They are deep canals made by the erosion of water in the clay ground, particularly friable

In the area around Pienza the Tuscan countryside in its autumnal mantle

Thank you for your appreciation on my little excursion in Tuscany and more specifically in the Sienese area.
Last episode dedicated to the wandering between lost churches, dream towns and an autumn campaign
15ees9i.jpg

Pienza is one of my favorite "ideal cities" founded during the Renaissance. Finally I managed to see her calmly, without the crowd of tourists. The day was ideal and I also bought some goat and sheep cheeses from a cheese maker
2h2qyqo.jpg

I also ventured into the lands of the great Tuscan wines with visits to Montalcino, with two wines brought to Verona and Montepulciano where, instead we bought a couple of sausages in the area
e0k2lf.jpg

The Horti Leonini are a public garden located in the ancient bulwarks of San Quirico d'Orcia (province of Siena).
96et0j.jpg

The Horti have maintained until today the original structure, constituting a well-preserved example of classic Italian garden of the sixteenth century and a model of park accommodation taken over the following centuries.
2lavno7.jpg

Built around 1581 on a land that Francesco I de 'Medici had donated to Diomede Leoni, they are named after their owner.
After the enjoyment of taste we were in San Antimo
9fxh0l.jpg

one of the best preserved churches in the Tuscan countryside, famous for being the seat of the monks' chanting at fixed hours of the day
6jki8m.jpg

In 1118 the construction of the church began under the guidance of Abbot Guidone. The most important point of reference for the project of the new church is the great Benedictine abbey of Cluny. The abbot requires the intervention of the French architects to design the new building, which is partly inspired by the Benedictine church of 1050 by Vignory
5x5p5c.jpg

It has been abandoned for centuries, the final restoration was in the 70s, now in the abbey are the Olivetan monks.
315fmdi.jpg

In Chiusi we were in a magnificent Etruscan museum and took advantage of the magnificent day to visit three tombs of the necropolis near the lake
97tgr4.jpg

We headed home to find the dying autumn make room for winter
