We had a pretty good cold and rainy day in L.A. today, so I donned my trusty fedora this morning. Too bad I'll never be as sexy as all those guys I saw tonight with wet hair.

You know, the ones laid up in bed tomorrow with pneumonia.

I don't care a rat's butt what this porn-scribbling, vapid twit thinks of me, my hats or my 7000 like-minded friends.

Bravo! And just what are people paying to hear this twit expound her vapid opinions? Nothing. And absolutely worth every penny of it.

I think others have nailed it as well. We live in the age of the Internet and anyone would can navigate the internet and knows how to use a mouse and keyboard can suddenly be "a published writer." Does that make their opinion is any better or more valid than anyone else's? No. Certainly - most are most definitely not.

We live in the land of freedom of speech...but that doesn't mean that anyone else is required to listen...

WELL DONE!

Be-hatted Ones,

Looks like you boys carried the day. This little girl has taken down most of the later posts you submitted (leaving her "witty" retorts up, of course), and has closed the thread to comment. Her reasoning?

"You've only seen 1/2, the rest were unpublishable... I suppose there's little point in allowing further comments from this little club, as they don't really seem logical enough for an objective discussion."

In other words, there were too many of your brains, and not enough of hers.

I was discussing something with a friend the other day.

Other subcultures are much more accustomed to being ridiculed then the 'fedora, vintage wearers'.....

...

I've had 30 years of ridicule for wearing dead men's clothes, most recently last Friday night when someone wondered why a Teddy Boy was listening to soul music in a pub. It's second nature to ignore the sneers.

Actually it's kind of embarrassing. Some of the vitriol, even in this thread, is totally unwarranted. Isn't she entitled to her opinion? Isn't that what her blog exists for, to give vent to her thoughts and opinions?

Obviously some of us were deeply insulted by what she had to say, but she was only talking about a hat and not the face. (Some of us are severely unsexy below the brim as well, but that is just the way the bones were pitched, and we have to deal, so, as they say, feh.)

There is no reason to take it personally and no reason to get personal. How can it not have ocurred to some of us that dressing up like a Fellows illustration or (oy vey) like Indiana Jones is a little eccentric at best, a little weird to most civilians and sadly unattractive to many women? If it hasn't, then simply consider this an object lesson and move on. Until you see your name or picture in her blog with the caption "Unsexy saddo" you can relax, keep it under your hat and let others think what they will.

Hey, I just realized

One of Izzy's statements that cheesed me off came rather early in the article - so early I forgot it until I reread:

The Snow Queen said:
99% of all white men look ridiculous in these. [...] Sorry, I’m not trying to be racist, or anything, they just usually don’t look right on whitey.

They sometimes look good on black men, but only those who can really pull off the well-dressed gangster look, or old blues musicians. And the men these look the best on – Cubans and other Latinos – don’t always look sexy in them, either.
This is a great example of the low standard applied to fashion and/or gossip journalism: you can get away with all kinds of crap you couldn't in a "serious" format, and you don't have to explain a thing. Like what about certain nonwhite cultures gives them a pass on a style that was once universal. Because it's just fashion writing.

Never mind her backtracking later on when she says some white dudes look "cool but not sexy" in hats...or that she seems confused right off the bat in the passage above concerning "good" vs. "sexy" vs. "cool" vs. whatever.

Finally: What kind of little club has 7,000 people signed up? Talk about your mass culture mentality...I guess anything under 10 million is a lunatic fringe.

Well done?

What would happen if a group of baseball cap fans, for example, came over here and behaved similarly?

I'm sorry, but it looks to me like a whole group of board members deliberately went to her column and insulted her as well as her opinions. And no small amount of bile was directed at her person here as well, not just at her opinion. Such behaviour would not be tolerated if it were aimed at another member, so how can we applaud its direction at anyone else?.

Well done? Not as far as I'm concerned. To me, the whole sordid affair is nothing but an embarrassment.

Not being able to take a little kidding isn't sexy. It doesn't show confidence.

I read Ms. Snow's blog entry and didn't find anything vicious or personal in it. A woman who doesn't share our mores or sense of styles--in other words, someone who isn't up our alley--said she doesn't think fedoras are sexy. So what?

I do get the impression that Ms. Snow loves attention. And the FL has been suckered into giving her a great deal of it.

Some of us did take it too far, true.

But it isn't as tho she just blogged about her personal tastes - she put them out there as proscriptions. Pronouncements. She was high-handed about it. A bit snide, even, under the smiley (smirking?) tone.

Not vicious, true. Not personal. But presumptuous and smug.

Doc-

You're trying real hard to defend Ms. Snow and that's a magnanimous gesture. I doubt she would return the favor, but that's no matter. I don't think anyone in the FL minds Ms. Snow having an opinion or expressing it. I think those that have returned fire are, like me, put off by her Ann Coulter-like verbal eye-rolls and smarmy responses to those who simply express disagreement. She asked for it by going public with her thoughts. She's a big girl. Let her defend her position, if it is defensible, or suffer defeat.

Then again, some don't see Coulter's smarmy eye-rolling as anything more than a simple statement of one woman's opinion.

There's also a certain chivalric code that says it's unmanly to defend oneself against attack by a woman. I don't know if that enters into relevance here but it does cross my mind.

Actually...by heading right over there like a lynch mob...you did indeed 'mind' her expressing her opinion.

Its -her- blog..yes...but last I checked, and maybe this is a huge mistake on my part...FL'rs were supposedly 'better mannered' then the ball cap wearing crowd.

In 'defending' your position...you raised her hit count, made her blog go -upwards- on search engines and demonstrated that courtesy and manners are indeed a lost art, even in the hatted crowd.

Frankly, I think my hats add a bit of charm and, at times, might make me look handsome. They also help keep me warm and in the shade.

But sexy? I don't know, maybe in a blue moon. But I say leave sexy in the bedroom where it belongs; I don't like to flaunt sexy for every yahoo or online expert wannabe to see.

True, but she's not talking that kind of sexy. She doesn't mean boudoir, take-me-now-big-boy sexy. She means, basically, magnetic and manly in public image. As in "would any woman in her right mind ever willingly see romantic possibility in such a man, or is he just a complete drip?"

Clearly Isabella is crackers--she ought to visit the Lounge before making such a statement! That's my two cents anyway.
