I just hopped on this thread. I'm a little surprised at how many people support the view that "everyone's opinion is equal and therefore nobody should criticize or voice displeasure over said opinion."

On the internet, everyone is a publisher, which does level the field a bit, unlike the old days when someone who was published had to earn that right one way or another. Personally, I don't see anything wrong with calling a grossly generalized comment, like "Fedora's are not sexy," stupid.

You're right: All generalizations are stupid! :D

But seriously, I agree with Dumbjaw that there's no need to take offence and get all in a tizzy when someone's opinion is different from our own. It's not that it's wrong to say their opinion is stupid, it's just that there are so many stupid opinions on the internet that it's not really worth responding to them (imho).

I wonder if the real issue here is that all us hat wearers constantly have to contend with people who want to express their (often stupid) opinions about our hats, and it tends to make us a bit sensitive.

Possibly so. I personally get way more positive attention for my hats than negative.

I don't think anyone likes to be criticized for what he/she wears, especially for something so petty and inconsequential as a hat. Now if you're wearing this hat, that's another story.

My beef is with dumb comments in general. I figure that anyone who is willing to put their dumb comments out there for general consumption shouldn't be surprised if people have something to say about it.

I will assume this is probably the case.
While we fellas are not consciously wanting to looks particularly "sexy" in our fedoras, being called unsexy touched a nerve.

I am sure I am not alone amongst FL members in that I have pored over tons of literature on sartorial matters.....these books and articles frequently give advice and much of it is actually very good. I am referring to some basic stuff, how the less thin or shorter of us should avoid horizontal stripes, how some colors favor certain skin tones, etc etc.

But inevitably they make firm and heavily biased statements - you should never do ______, the well-dressed man never wears a ______ with a _______ and so forth. I have found a lot of these books are colored by their times - I have one well-known and respected book from the mid-eighties, for example. In most of the chapters, where it advocates timeless dress clothes and basic restrained good taste, it remains a valid guidebook. However it includes a sportswear and casual chapter that features items that are SO 1985 I don't think they're EVER coming back! (Yes I know people wear old stuff eventually - they won't be wearing this stuff, trust me.).

Again I say, I think differing opinions are fine. I wouldn't want everyone wearing a fedora, and I disagree with almost everyone posting here in that I DO think fedoras are sexy - or at least they can be. And again, the fedoras worn by members here are head and shoulders above the trendy junk that article featured.
I fail to see the big deal here.

Someone's opinion is that a particular styler of hat doesn't look 'sexy' on most men (and,as she specifies in the comments later, women). So what?

How many of the men here are aiming for 'sexy' anyway? I know I'm not, and I doubt that there are very many male members of the Lounge who are. It's horses for courses - what one social grouping finds attractive will leave another cold. To be completely honest, I actually agree with Ms Snow: I don't find men in fedoras sexy either. Can they look sharp? Yes. Smart? Yes. But only as long as the hat suits both outfit and wearer. 'Sexy'? Sorry chaps, you're out of luck.

Certain women in fedoras, however... But even then the outfit's got to work as a whole.

The reactions in this thread actually bring me to another question entirely: are we so insecure about the way we dress that we feel the need to attack anyone who doesn't happen to like it, and dares to voice that opinion publicly? The hat-wearers singled out in the article prove her points. Of course she's chosen those examples for that very reason, but they're the same type of examples that we ourselves use when talking about getting 'it' wrong.

Tastes differ. I don't want a cookie-cutter world of any stripe, and think we'd all be poorer for it. Ms Snow is entirely entitled to her opinion, and so are we.

I have to agree with the lady.
Well said.

I don't think women collectively get together at a Global “what is what isn’t sexy” summit. It’s just an opinion and won't affect your personal life to much If you dress to be sexy. I know I don't dress to be sexy, I dress because I naturally love fedoras and clothes. I have had women tell me I looked sexy when wearing a fedora, I’ve had women that it was a “turnoff” for them and women who could careless. Plus sexy is little vague of an idea anyways there is no defining sexy factor for all people. If she writes sex columns for GQ and thinks I look “cool” not sexy its still something to work with.

Much Ado About Nothing

After checking on this thread several times today, I decided to check the blogger's post again. Here is the last post I read.

Awwwww..... look at all the visitors from the fedora lounge. Its sweet that y'all have a club like that. You should teach each other how to read, though.

I didnt say hat wearing was bad - there are a lot of sexy hat styles, this just isnt one of them. I also said Fedoras can be sexy sometimes, and have even included 2 examples. I also said they can look cool - but that does not mean they look sexy.

A Fedora might make some of you look better, but that doesnt mean it makes you look sexy, and it surely doesn't make you a man. That's just about the silliest allusion ever made. Thanks for visiting!

Maybe she just wanted to stir up a Tempest in a Teapot.

I accept the fact that most people do not think hats are sexy (at least every woman i've talked to). Just like every woman i've spoken to doesn't think high waisted trousers are sexy.

These things we wear are old men's clothes. they are styles from the past. They are archaisms. No more than memes to the majority of the population. No point getting annoyed whe someone suggests this.

And yes, Feraud, blogs are generally garbage. Maybe 0.5% of the bloggers i've read have something interesting to say. The rest are the pointless, unintelligible ramblings self-obsessed people; too wrapped up in narcissistic verbal onanism to see how unimportant they really are.

While I do find it funny we should even care about this blogger who is probably getting more visits from us than she normally gets in a year, I guess it does bring up the topic for discussion.

I would say that while a Fedora rarely will make you look sexy, what really does. It isn't like a fedora will make you look unsexy. A dumb cheap hat worn badly might, but I dare say a person is sexy or not and a hat has little to do with it.

On the other hand, some guys, and I hope we all are ones of them, look handsome, dashing and good in a fedora. And some women may find looking handsome and good sexy. Moreover, while many women will surely find a guy wearing odd old clothes unsexy or unappealing as opposed to the wacky styles of the day, some guys wear well, and some women respond very well to (and not just vintage lovers) a guy that looks like he walked out of a golden era movie. We have all grown up with the glamour of the era in movies, and while most guys don't care much about it, most women still love to dress up and hav ea little glamour, hence cna respond quite positively to a well dressed vintage guy in a nice hat. In fact, sometimes you have to fight off a drunk girl who wants to grab your hat and try it on.

When I first read the blog, I had a roaring headache, and it only made it worse. My posts at that time reflected that. Now, with normalcy restored (Patient: My brain hurts! Doctor: It'll have to come out!), I only find amusement in it. And truthfully, everyone marches to the beat of a different drummer. Her's just happens to be out of step with many of us (or is it the other way around? Who knows?). Here's an idea, let's invite her to the next QM gathering! lol lol lol lol lol lol

Isabella Snow is a saucy little wench who writes very naughty books for a living. How naughty? Remember those dirty little romance novels you “borrowed” when mom wasn’t looking? Excellent. Now imagine something similar, but with descriptives so explicit, a pornstar would blush. Want to read the excerpts/buy the books? Click here!

And speaking of naughty subjects, I'm also a Sex Tip correspondent for the popular online men's magazine AskMen.com - feel free to pop by and leave comments on my articles if you have something to add, I love it when readers get involved!

Let’s see, what else. In addition to writing dirty novels, Isabella Snow is actually the penname of a 31-year-old, professional blues singer. Want to hear me? Click Here for the YouTube vid. By the way, I’m American, but I’ve been living in Europe for the last half-decade. I’m also shamelessly open about my lifestyle, which leans toward bondage and domination.

Still there? Good. Cos Isabella is also a Recovering Feminist (which means I used to be one, but have since recovered), with loads and loads of opinions to force on you poor, unsuspecting souls. For the ladies, I’ve numerous tips on dating, beauty, fashion, sex, family issues and more. For the men – I’m going to do my best to help you return to where y’all were before the feminists destroyed everything they secretly loved about you.

Additionally, I maintain a semi-popular blog and always get a little giddy when new people join in. So don't forget to pop in over there and tell me how much you love me. Click Here to visit my blog. Phew! Shameless self-promotion can be exhausting! Which is my cue to wrap this up. Check back often for my rants and raves, and I'll try not to disappoint.

xx Isabella

TIME magazine disagrees with this woman. According to the latest Hat Life newsletter, TIME named the fedora as number seven in a list of the ten must-have fashion items:

“Fedoras capped the year off for both men and women. Their vintage, rat-packy allure was enhanced after Justin Timberlake brought sexy back in them.”

High-waisted jeans are also on the list, but I doubt they're as high-waisted as we like.

I think in contemporary fashion terms, "high-waisted" means "underwear/ bum cleavage not visible." lol

I was discussing something with a friend the other day.

Other subcultures are much more accustomed to being ridiculed then the 'fedora, vintage wearers'.....

Goths for example -expect- people to mock and harass them...its part of the known thing.

I think if -we- realised we are a subculture just like the rest...and just learned to -expect- that most people don't share the aesthetic...silly things like others opinions would not matter.

We would, however, run the risk of becoming hard, closed, suspicious of outsiders.

We're lucky so far not to be a known quantity in the larger culture. If we get known, it's got to be positively. If negatively - I, for one, would bow out.

HAHAHA.....you honestly think as a group that -we- arnt suspicious of anyone not sharing our ideals and aesthetics...?

I can show you a whole slew of 'dirty hippy' threads....and a few 'lets put up a picture of someone to make fun of them' threads......that would say we are already hardened against anyone who isn't -US-...

The issue is more the delusion that -we- are the normal ones..and everyone else is the abberation.
