Yeah, I always hear of problems with the head bolts or the gaskets themselves. They also made it difficult to transplant a more reliable engine into the car, which is the route I'd prefer to take. I had considered modding an Eldorado like the one you pictured to fit a 3.8 V6 ,and use it as a commuter car, but I just am not a fan of 6 cylinder engines.

Just fix the head bolt problem and they are the most reliable engine ever made. If only the engineers didn't have cranial rectal inversion when designing the heads. :rolleyes:

Granted, for the most part I bomb around in my old Jeep but I've mentioned to y'all about my little Talon. Big V8s are awesome and I love them....but there's something to be said for a 4 banger churning out 275hp to all four wheels while making 25mpg that makes me giggle.

Of course I've always said when the Jeep is retired from daily duty I'm going to find me a Mercury Marauder.
 
I still have to pull the 4.5 out of the Eldorado to repair the headgaskets. I am completely unmotivated to do so.

I'll bet that the bolts are not holding. The threads are probably stripped or not holding properly. You can't torque them down properly. That is a fun job to fix. :p You have to retap the threads to the SureGrip bolt size and then replace the heads and gaskets. Greeaaatttt. It is a pain to do but you don't have any more problems after that.

Sounds like you've been here before. The P.O. admitted to getting it hot, and just dropped a bottle of block sealer into the coolant to fix the leak, so I knew what was coming. I'll see what it looks like once I open her up. If the car wasn't so damn clean I wouldn't have given it a second look.

Worst case scenario is me having to grab an engine at work, rebuilding it and having a fantastic Caddy again.

I've thought about it, but they're all terrible around here. My mechanic is good, reasonably priced, and a close friend. It's just every time I try to set up with him, he 'overslept' and doesn't get back to me until 7pm. Oversleeping 'til 1pm, I can forgive, but 7pm is a bit excessive, if you ask me.

Find a new one if that is the case. :D

I'm in the same boat as you. 302, 307 Olds, 318, 350, and 351. Only ever had a 6 banger once, in a '58 Chevy. Had the inline 6 and a three-on-the-tree. Pulled that and put a 327 and a TH400 trans. Pepped it up a bit.

I don't own a single car that doesn't have a V-8. From the 283 to the massive 500, they get the job done. :p

Heh. Every car I had up until I bought the Talon was V8. 302,305,327,318,350,351,360,383,390,396,402,409,428, and of course 454. Not saying I don't love me some V8 power...I most certainly do, but I also appreciate being able to squeeze so much out a small package. Plus it's fun to dust off a Mustang and see the look on the guys face when he realizes he just got beat by a 20 year old fourbanger.

Do the head bolt fix and you will be surprised what a new engine it is. :p Overheating is one of the sure signs you have the same problem I have encountered.
