You know how it is, there you are in your panama strolling down the avenue on a hot & sunny day, I don't care How much shade you find, it is almost too hot to wear a hat 'cause you are sweating like a pig... my solution------------>

A sokool, perfect in every way, but the sweatband must have been paper thin glove leather as it had dry-rotted right around the stitching holes.

And since retailers want ten bucks for 1/64th of a thin terrycloth towel with sticky back, then another ten for postage---> nuts to that. I was thinking "hey, I have a bathroom cabinet FULL of a similar item"!

And besides, I feel very pretty.

All seriousness aside, does anyone know what this might be?

I suspect it is not an Ecuadorian panama.

Umm, in a very strange way that really seems like a good idea.
I totally agree with the sweating like a pig so much one is tempted not to wear a hat but we won't be doing that

Pretty creative solution, Rick. After years and years of teaching art I habitually carry a bandana in my rear pocket, so I just end up wiping down the sweatband once in a while. Does the job.

Can't help with identifying your hat. My favourite straw hat is about 50 years old and only bears the imprint on the sweatband of a Toronto hat store that closed in 1964. I have no idea...I'm still feeling my way around the world of hats. Always learning.

The bandanna in the pocket idea seems to me to be the beat alternative (other than the polyethylene Capricorn from Akubra I bought, totally sweat proof!). And I plan to buy a few more poly straws from them.

For your solution, one must be VERY secure in his masculinity (I am impressed), it is factually a great idea. I just can't get past the principle of it myself.

I have a "Joe Fedora" polyprop "milan". It looks great, hard to tell it's not straw. But I haven't really worn it this summer, but it is a heavier hat than a Panama (as is a real milan).

Do you think that my above "Sokool" might be a non-straw construction, cause it has kept me quite cool.

Tested it out a month ago at an air show, there all day, temps into the 90's. I always sweat a fair bit anyway, and I stained my favorite Panama Bob hat on a 96 degree day at Disney this Spring, so I was determined to find something I could wear in extra high heat (and rain). The Capricorn fits the bill nicely, it breaths about as well as a real straw, but it won't soak up and sweat (so no staining). The hat band didn't even get sweat stained, though if it had, I could easily have removed it and washed it.

Akubra has a couple of models that look (at least on the web) much like Panamas. I plan to try one soon. Not that these will take the place of Panamas for me (the real thing is still preferable, just "higher maintenance"). But on a day of extreme heat, or one where I expect high activity/perspiration (or precipitation), I will go to the poly straw. For other days, the bandanna in the pocket seems a great idea (back when I was a runner 25 years ago, I carried one whenever I ran, I see no reason they won't work as well now- I plan to start carrying one anytime I am wearing a hat- thanks to DNO for the suggestion!).

As for the mini-pads, I'll leave those for the real men here who can get past the "ick" factor .

It's a novel solution, but I'm sure an effective one. FWIW, guys in the hardcore Trekkie scene who dress as Klingons have been sticking sanitary towels under the forehead ridges to keep sweat at bay for some years, apparently with much success.
