It shows what happens when you pay up for a real illustrator for your ad - this looks as good as any of the other illustrations in the magazine. Yes, the coat looks outstanding, but the smaller details, like the football stadium and field in the background, are also very well done.

We talk about it regularly, but it is amazing at how prevalent herringbone was back then. Heck, sometime it seems as if half the suits and overcoats were herringbone. While that's an exaggeration, when you see a movie from the '30s-'50s, you almost can't miss running into at least one herringbone suit or overcoat.

I agree that the ads you've identified are much nicer, and hence more enjoyable. Each issue has far more small ads than I include, and those I've selected are illustrations that I feel best present the styles, and frankly, are just the most attractive.

The herringbone tweed top or overcoat was most certainly a staple of my boyhood, and IMO, a handsome choice in any era. When returning from military duty in the early '70's, one in grey was among my first acquisitions for my business wardrobe.

Great stuff, thanks. I have love for all formal wear, my wife and I can’t wait to don our formal daywear for afternoon tea once Covid is no longer rearing its ugly head. ❤️

And, of course, few wear it better than Mr. Menjou.

Quick note (because I think this should be predominantly about the pictures) to say thank you Flanderian, you are doing the Lord's work! I often wondered if these were compiled in one place-I needn't ask anymore! What a priceless resource.

I'm pleased that you enjoy it.

The collection is a bit arbitrary as to the period I've elected to include. The term "The Golden Age" is by definition subjective as to when it began and ended. And my choice to include some selected advertising is arbitrary being beyond the original editorial content.
