The price they charge outside Japan is ridiculous. Nevertheless, Imo, the McCoy's has become a premium fashion brand like Ralph Lauren with a serious markup for the name only. There are more reasonable priced Japanese engineer boots like Lonewolf. For horsehide, there are Phigvel, Steam Locomotive etc.took a trip to downtown NYC and checked out the very aloof Real McCoy store next to Blue and Green. Not sure how these Japanese can survive the world market, $2700 engineer boots, $3000 motorcycle jacket, i don't care what horsehide you use and what your labor cost is, these people live in an economical bubble! I personally work for a Japanese company in the US and our products are the same, $$$$ in a market of $$. This is way beyond fair labor, this is ignoring the world's people's need to make a living and support themselves.
While I agree the price is ridiculous, I have handled a regular Diamond Dave J-100 and I doubt Dave uses the "same " leather. At the very least, they are not dyed the same way. Himell Brothers supposedly also uses shiniki leather and look at the price they charge. Those are gorgeous and are not stupidly priced. I agree that some of the JP repro stuff is too much while also being limited size-wise. My J-100 from Diamond Dave cost less than half what a Buco would and uses the same leather, fits me better, and while not as laser straight, is of IMO same quality. It's weird, though. Not all the Japanese denim brands are too insanely priced. It seems that the report brands are the ones that really charge exorbitant amounts.
The attractions boots actually look better than the Buco boots imo because of the lack of the bulbous toe.

Jimmer, thx man. Seriously nerve racking!
If it were me, I'd go for soft toe nomads, because I like the pointier profile vs the boss. I didnt think white's was offerjng a soft toe versiou but i stumbled on a photo of pair somewhere in cyberspace (I think it was the IH forum?).
I'm laughing real hard to myself regarding your comment on sleeping in the back yard. My wife was pointing to the couch when I told her I was eyeing my next pair of boots!
Shinki horsehide hmm, i once had two Chapman A2 made out of shinki, but they felt quite different from the McCoy's horse, although i am not sure if the McCoy's are shinki, though they are japanese tanned. in any case, for engineers, i don't know if the idea of using Japanese horsehide, lightweight, is a good idea, considering the original American engineer boots are made out of denser, more oily American leathers. For durability, will the Japanese horse (Attraction, Craft-rite, #thank you Bret!#) stand up to Horween?
My wife says "what did you buy today honey, show me!". The only reason I sleep on the couch is because i want to shop all night.
Attractions horsehide. These I think are priced competitively but Also Saw the limited edition Attractions horsemen horsehutt at 158,000yen. View attachment 23134 View attachment 23135
Shinki will press and color their hides to customer specs. The Japanese manufacturers generally get their hides hot pressed to remove the graining, which is completely the opposite of the way John specs his. Also, he and DD and others are known to go in on hide orders so I wouldn't be surprised if they were the same black pigment dyed Shinki...
Ok back to boots
No idea of the tannery but I'd assume it was JP tanned. The tea core shade is really nice regardless
The dd I have handled just feels different from the mccoys. The price of McCoy J100 now is just around usd1600 in Japan. Oh well, cross border trade and everything you mentioned. What makes you think he uses a different leather? He doesn't always use Shinki, you know. He has used many different leathers and I have never even heard of anyone other than myself having a Shinki jacket from him (although I am sure there are others.) In addition, he is a good friend of John Chapman of Goodwear and sourced his Shinki with/from him if I remember correctly.
Himel charges so much in large part because he also has his products in retailers and can't undercut them on his own website. I remember less than a year ago he had jackets for $1500 and now everything is around $2200 or more. McCoy charges $3000 for some of their Shinki jackets, twice as much as what John at Goodwear charges for his Shinki jackets, yet nobody questions that.
Sorry for the rant, but this is pretty ridiculous. You probably handled one of his Horween pigment dyed jackets or something like that.
Now, back to more important matters:
smoothsailor: Those look absolutely amazing!!! Makes me even more anxious for mine!
You are probably right about the thinner Japanese hh.Shinki horsehide hmm, i once had two Chapman A2 made out of shinki, but they felt quite different from the McCoy's horse, although i am not sure if the McCoy's are shinki, though they are japanese tanned. in any case, for engineers, i don't know if the idea of using Japanese horsehide, lightweight, is a good idea, considering the original American engineer boots are made out of denser, more oily American leathers. I think the Attractions are made of Japanese hh though the Japanese do sometimes source Italian hh. As to the McCoy hh, they always use aniline hand overdye which comes off even just by trying the jacket on.Well maybe Shinki give McCoys a special version or maybe there is a JDM version of the leather. My DD Shinki does look extremely similar to JC's Shinki. I don't know how it looks compared to McCoys shank as much.
Are the attractions made out of Japanese HH? I know they are HH, but I was unaware of what type.
