Engineer Boots, Harness Boots...

Recently saw some Wescos at around the four hundred dollar mark, selling through a US stockist. Are these a cheaper line, or...? I'm also tempted by the Whites Nomads increasingly, but the lack of opportunity to try before I buy (no UK stockists) is off-putting, especially as I read all sorts of advice online about sizing which conflicts.

Nice color, Dav! Here is one more shot of the Wesco harness boots, with my massive Morrisons next to them. I am not a great photographer...

I have to laugh at myself here: I see Dav buy boots that are designedc and built to take serious wear and tear, and I'm shocked he spent that much and then, well..... usedc them as their designers intended. I'll be having my jeans dry-cleaned next... :p

I can see my beautiful cream Wayfarer out of the corner of my eye from here, and I can't help but think 'is that a smudge on the sleeve...?' and panicking slightly.

Thanks. I don’t know if they’re the same last because I don’t have engineers. I’d assume so. They’re not the same as the Morrison’s I’d guess.

Actually, in hindsight, I think the Morrisons are using the western last as they are pointier. I think the two-tone ones are using the "narrow" last.
For some definition of narrow. I have 3E feet. The last is the same for engineers. There’s a choice of toe style. Check the web site. My ideal is that flat front toe. But these were a screamin deal.

I think their "narrow" refers to the narrow toe shape. Their standard engineer lasts have a much rounder toe. The lasts they typically use for their engineers are their standard round, bubble toe round, and motor patrol. Infrequently, people customize with the cowboy toe (which I believe is what the Morrisons use). The "narrow" toe is one they use for the Japanese market (from my understanding).

If you wear them a bit (say 30 times) I reckon that part of the heel will be gone.

As long as the full flat of the heel and some part of the front sole both touch the ground when sitting under their own weight, I think they'd be fine.

Edward, very interesting insight. So, the heel DONT fully touch the ground & that’s the first thing I noticed. I called Wesco & spoke to some cobblers, that the front area of the heel actually lift off from the ground about two mm, as if the whole sole of the boots is curling up into a fetus position. They say it’s by design & the weight of the wearer will lower the arch & flatten. I was tempted to think this is why I get a concussion from the rear of the heel every time I land on my heel, but it could also involve other factors. Like the leather midsole is still stiff & doesn’t bend easily, such as that the heel is high & not angled like a cowboy heel.

Hmn, I've had a pair with the opposite issue (i.e. the 'excess' is at the front rather than rear of the heel). I'd be inclined to assume Wesco know what they are at and just wear 'em in, but if it's causing physical discomfort it might be worth having that part of the heel ground down. Worth asking a cobbler first.
