Thanks, Sue. Now, what in the world makes you think that it will be sporting a teardrop...? lol

Great clean slate on that Borsolino, JTL. Geive us a look when you finish with it.

Love that Portis above as well. Nice looking with the pug; similar to the Stetson Colony I have with the pug instead of a classic ribbon.

Dobbs homburg

Catching up...

Won this Dobbs homburg on Aug. 12. Size 7-3/8 with 5-5/8" crown. $47.

Cloverleaf knot on sweatband, no plastic or oilskin in liner, embroidered label, and interior tag says "K29367, 5064, Block 5-5/8, Sz 7-3/8". Any notions about the age of this one? Nice condition, only needed the usual.

Next, something more recently acquired for comparison.

Cavanagh homburg

This just in Thursday:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dl...4957492&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT#ht_500wt_943

]

Black Cavanagh homburg in size 7-1/2. Classic profile seen in 1920's pictures and ads, but not that old of course. Seller posted one vague picture, little information apart from "very good condition" so this was a gamble. But it turned out quite well.

Some previous owner used glue to tack down the corner of the bow and it got onto the felt (grrrr...) but that scraped off. Some soiling outside that came off easily with plain water on a paper towel. Note the lovely sharp reverse curl of the brim, reminiscent of good bowlers. Narrow underturned ribbon binding.

No sticky residue from hair oil or staining or anything on the liner, which has no plastic or oilcloth but consists of very thick, soft satin. A cloverleaf bow at the back of the supple sweatband, which felt like it was made yesterday.

No mothing, no dings, no loose stitches; extremely dense felt that defies any reason for steaming to shape the crown - it takes anything you put in, keeps it there until you change it. Unreal.

Tag on inside reads "Reorder D49158, Block 456, Sz 7-1/2". Apparently bought at Marshall Field & Co. Mens Store in Chicago, a classy place indeed. Any clue as to date for this one? Brad Bowers perhaps...?

I thought the felt on the Dobbs homburg was pretty good, but this puts it totally to shame.

A few pictures in the ad that looked sort of promising...so I bit. Here's what came.

Dobbs hat in very dense dress felt (weighs 5.35 oz), neatly done overwelt on 2-5/8" brim, open crown is generous 5-7/8", ribbon with tidy back bow is 1-15/16" wide.

No moth damage, no evident wear or stains at all. The ad said slight wear at front of sweatband - not so, was only salt deposit that wiped right off. Hair gunkum left stickiness on the heavy vinyl liner protector, but that went away with a little soapy water. What I mentioned was the only way you'd know this wasn't NOS. Even the box looked almost new.

Dobbs in the characteristic angled letters on the 1-3/4" textured sweatband, tag inside reads "To duplicate: T78681 151, Block: 5-1/2, Size: 7-1/2". Any guesses as to age? Blue label any clue?

Like the Cavanagh homburg, steaming is just pointless with this one. You shape it anyway you like and there is stays. Somehow didn't quite expect this with Dobbs. Don't know what grade or quality of felt, but dang, it seems extraordinary to me - approaching that of the Cavanagh in my icon. I've been wearing this a lot.

Oh yeah, one other little oddity. The ad picture of the interior showed something that looked like staining of the liner...this turned out to be the protruding edge of cardboard that was shaped to go under the sweatband, the two pieces fastened casually together with staples. The size tag was glued to the cardboard, not to the sweatband. The hat fit better without this, of course. Anyone ever heard of something like that? And how come the owner kept it in?
