Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

I concur.

And whoever the shipping company was cannot shirk their portion of responsibility for turning the box into that mess. That's their fault. Just a little, tiny, teeny-weeny, bit of care and attention on the part of the shipping company would have avoided this outcome … [huh] I couldn't give a crap how overworked they are. They need to take care of the packages they are in possession of.

My guess is that Tampahound's hat (are you referring to that one, Dinerman?) is in fact an open-crowned homburg, not a derby.

.

I was thinking it was more along the lines of this ad below, but it's hard to tell without seeing it in person

My first Knox, very happy with the transaction. This shot after a touch of fussing, though it needs a touch of a stretch and a minor ribbon adjustment.

You don't think that red 57 could be a year stamp, do you? Nah, couldn't be...

Brad

Is that really what that means? I have that stamp on a '40s hat with a 29. It's an Portis Open Road clone that I can't imagine being that old.

I really have no idea what it means, I was just being ornery.;) We always look for things to support our hypotheses, even if they just happen to be coincidental.

Belegnole sounds like he's on to something. Local 57, maybe.

Yeah, I wanted all them! But I don't have a Homburg and this one looks like it's in great shape! If I like it I'll be looking for a grey one.

Just won this beauty

I was watching that one and dinner and the need to save for something else got in the way. A very nice looking hat.....

Brad, I've had a few friends in unions and ran into labels and whatnot before. The picture that prompted this has two union marks on it besides the 57. The large obvious one being the Hatters Cap & Millinery Union and the small one at 10 o'clock the Printers Union. I did read in my short internet adventure that
The United Hatters Cap and Millinery Workers International Union (UHCMW) was formed in 1934 by the amalgamation of United Hatters of North America (UHNA) and the Cloth Hat, Cap and Millinery Workers International Union (CHCMW).
So this hat came from after that.....another dating tool

The hat on the left, the MacLachlan, ended tonight. For a style you don't see too often, I find it remarkably similar to this Stack (the hat on the left) that I won about a month ago. Same short , overwelt brim. Same high, untapered crown. Same grosgrain sweatbands. Similar fuzzy, earth toned felt. Both have casual ribbon treatments.

Wow, those do look like cousins, don't they?

I've always assumed Stack hats were made by Hat Corporation of America, since Frank Stack was their plant superintendent. Makes sense to me, anyway. But these two hats make me wonder about MacLachlan now. Well, that, and the auction a few weeks back with that nice collection of new Cavanagh and MacLachlan hats. There almost has to be a connection there, somehow.

Can't figure it out, though, as MacLachlan had their own factory in Danbury. Would Stack have his hats made there instead of the factory he ran? Doesn't make sense either.
