Now you see I could live with that.....even the fish & chips is not bad.....but when you add in the Pomade, well its a bridge too far.

i have been treating a beautiful Cavanagh Homburg with the Air Sponge, on-and-off, for 2 years now. This one smelled like a cigar-smoking rat died in the hat box with it. Worst smell ever.

Like you say, Naptha does nothing to diminish the awful smell.

Max, I believe it's Anton Peschel Dinkelsbüh (Germany) so possibly late 1950s based on the liner.

I recently acquired this Stetson. Very old and well worn... Can anyone help me date the hat? Even though its seen better days, the felt on this has to be the most flexible, pliable, easy to mold/fold hat ever to held by these humbled hands.

From what I can see that hat could be rebuilt/restored. Probably be worth the effort.

Probably should, but I would want to have the original parts. I taped the ribbon onto the felt, lol. You can't see in the photo but the ribbon is yellow. Love the old contrast with the brown felt. Any ideas who restores historic hats like these?

Not many do that work and fewer still do it well. It can also be quite expensive due to the skilled handwork. Maybe @Randall Renshaw could give you a quote.

Only thing I know to do with it from the few pics is sew on a replacement vintage ribbon. Or maybe take the bow apart and see if there is some usable ribbon behind the existing bow to rob an inch or two from the back side. Bring the ripped ends together and sew in a seam, but there would have to be extra ribbon behind bow for it to work out.

The patience, skill, and time it takes to do these things right is incredible. I love seeing a restoration done right, but it’s understood that such things don’t come cheap. I don’t want to think about what Optimo would charge if you could convince them to even take on the job.

I’m still waiting for my first exposition medal Stetson to come my way. Not many of these old hats left, and finding one in my size? Might take divine intervention.

The last 2 vintage Stetson's I have restored had minimal ribbon behind the bow. I wash them gently using lingerie soap and the damned ribbon shrunk on one. Was able to stretch it enough to sew it back together but my damn heart was in my throat for some minutes.

I am restoring a vintage Resistol right now. The leather in the original sweat is still good but the stitching attaching the reed had rotted. I managed to sew it back on by hand with a small needle using the original stitch holes. I didn't track the time but it was lengthy. No way I will ever get to charge what it should cost based purely on my time. It was a labour of love and done to see if I could and to save a piece of hat history.

Unfortunately, I know what you mean. Stretching old ribbon can be devastating.
